Facebook’s documented “Audience and visibility” area covers profile details, contact and discovery settings, posts, Stories, Pages, Reels, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking. Some account-level choices can be managed together in Meta Accounts Center, but linking the services can also enable cross-account experiences and personalization, including ads and account suggestions. Instagram-only controls and menu labels are not established in the official material reviewed here, so verify the current Instagram app before following a precise path.
The short answer: separate app controls, with a shared Meta layer
Think of privacy on these services as three layers rather than a single Facebook-versus-Instagram switch.
- Controls inside an app: These govern what that service displays and how people interact with the account. Meta’s Facebook documentation explicitly lists a broad set of audience, visibility, tagging and blocking controls.
- Accounts Center controls: Facebook and Instagram accounts can be placed in one Accounts Center. Meta says this area manages selected settings and connected experiences, including some contact-information and advertising choices.
- Data-use and legal controls: Meta’s privacy notices describe information collected from users, devices, other Meta companies and partners, along with access, deletion and advertising choices that depend on jurisdiction.
A setting shared through Accounts Center does not make every Facebook and Instagram setting identical. A change to a Facebook post audience, for example, should be treated as a Facebook setting unless the interface specifically says it applies across accounts.
What Facebook’s documented privacy controls cover
Meta’s Facebook help page groups the principal controls under Audience and visibility. The categories are useful because they show the kinds of exposure a Facebook review should cover, rather than focusing only on whether the account is “public” or “private.”

| Facebook area | What to review | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Profile details | Which profile information is visible to different audiences. | Available choices can vary by profile type and region. |
| How people find and contact you | Ways other people can locate or reach the account. | Discovery settings are separate from the audience on an individual post. |
| Posts | The audience selected for current and future posts, and the visibility of existing posts. | Changing a default does not necessarily rewrite every earlier post. |
| Stories | Who can view Facebook Stories. | Story visibility is its own audience decision. |
| Pages | Privacy-related choices associated with Pages you manage or use. | Page and personal-profile contexts are not interchangeable. |
| Reels | Audience and visibility for Facebook Reels. | Short-video settings may be presented separately from ordinary posts. |
| Followers and public content | Who can follow the profile and see material designated public. | Public content is the most exposed audience category. |
| Profile and tagging | Who can post on or tag the profile and how tagged material appears. | Review both the ability to tag and the visibility of tagged items. |
| Blocking | People, profiles or interactions to block. | Blocking is a targeted control, not a replacement for setting an audience. |
Meta’s documented Facebook controls are at View and adjust your Facebook privacy settings. The page notes that the controls shown can differ according to profile type and region, so a missing option is not necessarily an error.
Instagram: do not assume a one-for-one match
The official material available for this comparison does not establish a complete, current inventory of Instagram-only privacy settings or current Instagram menu labels. In particular, it does not verify a point-by-point list for private accounts, message controls, activity status, tags, mentions or content interactions.
That evidence limit matters when you are comparing the services. It would be inaccurate to claim that Instagram has exactly the same audience, tagging or blocking controls as Facebook, or to provide a navigation path that may no longer match the app. Use the Instagram app’s current Settings and activity screens to inspect the choices actually offered on your account, and distinguish those choices from settings shown in Accounts Center.
When documenting an account for personal records, note the date, app version and account type alongside each Instagram choice. Professional, creator and personal accounts may present different options, and Meta can make features available by location or in stages.

What Accounts Center shares—and what it does not
Meta says you can add Facebook and Instagram accounts to the same Accounts Center. It describes Accounts Center as a place for selected shared settings and connected experiences, including contact information and ad preferences. The official explanation is available at About Accounts Center.
Accounts Center is therefore a useful audit point, not proof that the two apps have merged privacy controls. Check three things:
- Which accounts are listed: Confirm whether the Facebook and Instagram accounts you intend to keep separate are in the same Accounts Center.
- Which connected experiences are enabled: Read the descriptions beside each available experience instead of assuming every feature is active.
- Which settings are explicitly shared: Contact information, ad preferences and other choices may be offered together, but availability is not universal for every feature or location.
If you remove an account from Accounts Center, that changes the connection used for shared experiences; it does not erase information already held by either service, undo a post’s audience, or guarantee that past activity is no longer retained. Treat account unlinking as one control in a broader review.
Linking accounts can change personalization
Meta says information from accounts in the same Accounts Center may be used to personalize experiences across Meta services. Its examples include personalized ads and suggested accounts. Consequently, linking Facebook and Instagram is not merely a convenience for signing in or cross-posting: it can affect how content, recommendations and advertising are selected.

This does not mean that every item on one profile becomes visible on the other. Audience settings still govern the service and object to which they apply. The practical distinction is:
| Question | What the evidence supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Can the accounts be managed together? | Yes, selected settings and connected experiences can be managed through Accounts Center when the feature is available. | Not that every privacy setting is shared. |
| Can data affect experiences on both services? | Meta says information across accounts in one Accounts Center may support personalization, including ads and account suggestions. | Not that a Facebook post automatically becomes an Instagram post or vice versa. |
| Can I choose separate audiences? | App-specific audience choices remain relevant to the content being posted. | Not that separate audiences prevent all cross-account personalization. |
Discoverability is different from post privacy
A profile can have carefully chosen post audiences and still be easy to find. Meta’s Facebook guidance on data scraping recommends reviewing public information, profile suggestions and post audiences. It specifically calls out suggestions based on an email address or phone number.
Use this distinction when checking Facebook:
- Profile visibility: Review which details are public or visible to broader audiences.
- Suggestion settings: Check whether people can be prompted to find your profile through the email address or phone number associated with it.
- Post audiences: Inspect the audience for posts, Stories, Reels and other public content, not only the profile header.
- Tagged material: Review profile-and-tagging choices so that another person’s post does not create unexpected exposure on your profile.
These steps reduce unnecessary exposure; they are not a promise that information cannot be copied or collected. Meta’s scraping guidance is at Data scraping and what can you do to protect your information on Facebook.
Ads, partner activity and regional privacy rights
Meta’s Meta United States Regional Privacy Notice, effective May 23, 2025, is specifically a U.S. notice. It says Meta may receive personal information from users, other people, devices, Meta companies and partners. The categories described include identifiers, photos and videos, electronic network activity, location-related information and information supplied by users.

The notice also describes partner-supplied information about activity on and off Meta products. Examples include activity on websites and apps, games and purchases sent through business tools and integrations. Meta says such information can be used for purposes including product personalization and advertising.
For U.S. residents, the notice describes rights such as access, correction, deletion and certain opt-out rights where applicable state law provides them. It points to Ad Preferences and Accounts Center for advertising controls and notes that some options depend on location. Do not treat this U.S.-specific explanation as a universal legal right or a single worldwide opt-out path. If you live elsewhere, read the notice and choices presented for your jurisdiction.
Reviewing, downloading and transferring your information
Facebook provides more than audience switches for an account review. Meta describes tools for viewing information and activity, downloading all categories or selected categories for a chosen date range, and transferring copies of some information to another service. The relevant help page is Access or download information about your activity in Facebook groups.
Meta’s described information categories include activity, personal information, connections, logged information, security and login information, apps and websites off Facebook, preferences and ads. These tools answer different questions:

- Start with Facebook’s Audience and visibility area. Review profile details, how people find and contact you, post audiences, Stories, Pages, Reels, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking. Use Meta’s documented page as a checklist: View and adjust your Facebook privacy settings.
- Check Facebook discoverability. Review public profile details and suggestions based on your email address or phone number. Confirm that each post, Story, Reel and other public item matches your intended audience.
- Open Accounts Center. Record which Facebook and Instagram accounts are linked. Read the available connected-experience descriptions and inspect shared contact-information and advertising settings.
- Decide whether cross-account personalization fits your goal. If you want the services to recommend accounts and ads using information across the linked accounts, leave the relevant experience enabled. If you prefer less connection, review the offered controls and consider whether the accounts should remain linked.
- Review advertising and partner-activity choices available in your location. Use Ad Preferences and the options surfaced in Accounts Center. Interpret the result under the law and notice applicable to your region, not the U.S. notice by default.
- Inspect and retain account information. Use Facebook’s access, download and transfer tools when you need an audit trail, a selected date range or an eligible copy at another service.
- Verify Instagram in the current app. Because a complete Instagram-only inventory and current labels are not established here, open Instagram’s present settings and record the controls shown for your account. Do not assume a Facebook choice changed an Instagram-only setting unless the interface explicitly says so.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“I linked the accounts, so all privacy settings are synchronized.”
Accounts Center synchronizes only the selected settings and experiences it offers. Keep an app-by-app checklist for audiences, tags, discoverability and blocking.
“Private posts mean I cannot be discovered.”
Post audience and profile discoverability are separate. Review public profile details and suggestion settings as well as the audience on each item.
“Turning off ad personalization deletes partner data.”
Ad controls govern the choices presented for advertising; they do not necessarily erase all information Meta or a partner already processed. Read the applicable notice and available deletion or access choices.
“A download proves what the other app has.”
The documented access and download tools described here are Facebook tools. They are useful for inspecting Facebook information, but they are not evidence that every Instagram record or control is represented in the same place.
“The menu path I found online must still be current.”
Labels and availability can change by app version, profile type and region. For Instagram in particular, verify the screen currently shown on your device before relying on a precise instruction.
How the two services compare by decision point
| Decision point | Shared Meta layer | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Audience and visibility | Official documentation lists profile details, posts, Stories, Pages, Reels, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking. | A complete current Instagram-only list is not established in the reviewed official material; verify in the app. | Do not infer that an app-specific audience choice applies to both services. |
| Discoverability | Meta guidance calls out public information and profile suggestions using email address or phone number. | Current Instagram-only discoverability controls are not verified here. | Linked accounts may contribute to personalized account suggestions. |
| Cross-account use | Can be linked in Accounts Center. | Can be linked in Accounts Center. | Meta says information across accounts in one center may personalize ads and suggested accounts. |
| Advertising | Ad Preferences and Accounts Center may expose controls. | Some controls may be presented through Accounts Center; exact availability varies. | Options depend on location and applicable law. |
| Information access | Access, download and transfer tools are documented. | No equivalent complete inventory is established by the reviewed sources. | Shared management does not mean identical export tools. |
What to do when an option is missing
- Confirm whether you are viewing a personal profile, creator or professional account, or a Page.
- Check the account’s country or region and the date of the app version; Meta says availability can vary.
- Look in both the individual app and Accounts Center. A shared setting may appear in one location while an app-specific setting remains elsewhere.
- Read the explanatory text beside a control. A label such as “connected experiences” describes a relationship between accounts, not necessarily a change to the audience of existing content.
- If a legal right or advertising choice is important, use the privacy notice and request flow applicable to your location rather than relying on a screenshot or an instruction written for another country.
Bottom line for a privacy review
Review Facebook and Instagram separately for what each app exposes, then use Accounts Center to audit the relationship between them. Facebook’s documented checklist is broad and concrete; Instagram’s current app-specific inventory must be verified on the account itself. Linking accounts can make management easier, but it can also permit cross-account personalization of experiences such as ads and suggested accounts. Finish by checking discoverability, regional advertising choices and the information-access tools, and treat every setting as a decision about a particular app, account or connected experience—not as a universal switch.
