Facebook Messenger’s Watch Together lets people watch supported Facebook and Instagram videos in sync during a live Messenger call. Meta announced the feature on September 14, 2020. Its Help Center still documents it, though availability and controls can vary by device, region, account and app version. It is not a way to stream any movie or subscription service through Messenger.
What Watch Together does
Watch Together adds synchronized video playback to a Messenger call. Instead of sending a link and trying to press play at the same time, participants watch the same supported video while talking and seeing one another’s reactions. The video plays within the call experience; it is a co-viewing feature, not a separate streaming service.
Meta announced Watch Together on September 14, 2020, during the period when remote calls were an important way to stay connected. The announcement described a global rollout on Messenger for iOS and Android and said the feature was free. That did not mean every video was free or available to every viewer.

- Start or join an active Messenger video call with at least one other person.
- Open the call controls and choose the Watch Together option, if it appears.
- Choose a suggested video or browse the available content, then start watching together.
Meta’s original instructions used a swipe-up gesture to open the call menu. The current Help Center guidance describes the feature more generally as a control in an active call. Button names, icons and placement can differ between mobile and desktop app versions. Meta says Watch Together is available in the Messenger app for mobile and desktop, but not through Messenger in a mobile browser such as Safari or Chrome.

What can you watch?
Meta’s current documentation lists Facebook Reels, Facebook Watch videos, Instagram videos and posts, and IGTV as supported content. Instagram material requires a connected Instagram account. At launch, Meta also highlighted trending videos, sports highlights, tutorials, creator and fitness videos, Facebook Watch originals, and movie or entertainment clips available through Facebook Watch.
That catalog is not equivalent to Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube or another outside service. Watch Together does not grant access to subscription libraries, remove paywalls or guarantee that a particular clip will play. A video can be unavailable because of location or age restrictions, rights, creator privacy settings, deletion, or a disconnected Instagram account. Meta’s troubleshooting page covers several of these restrictions.

How many people can join?
The numbers in Meta’s 2020 launch announcement are historical: it said Messenger video calls supported up to eight people and Messenger Rooms up to 50. Those are not a reliable statement of the current limit for every call or account. Meta’s current Watch Together help page does not give a universal participant cap.

If Watch Together is missing or a video will not play
- Check the call and app: Join an active Messenger call, use the Messenger app rather than a mobile browser, and update Messenger. Meta provides app update guidance.
- Check the content: Try another video. The original may be age-restricted, unavailable in your region, deleted or restricted by its creator. For Instagram content, confirm that the account is connected.
- Improve the connection: Switch to a more reliable Wi-Fi or cellular connection and close bandwidth-heavy apps. Turning off one or more cameras may help if the call buffers or becomes unstable.
- Refresh Messenger: Restart the app if controls fail to load. If the issue persists, Meta recommends troubleshooting the feature; availability can vary and the control may not appear on every account or device.
Watch Together versus screen sharing
Use Watch Together when the video is in its supported Meta or connected Instagram catalog and you want synchronized playback in the call. For something outside that catalog, Messenger offers a separate screen-sharing feature, where available. Screen sharing is not the same as Watch Together: playback may not synchronize, audio or app restrictions may interfere, and a streaming service’s protections or terms may limit what can be shared.

Meta says people outside a Watch Together call cannot see or hear its audio and video, but Meta can know which videos are played; it says recommendations may draw on viewing behavior and profile interests. This is distinct from the privacy protections Meta describes for end-to-end-encrypted Messenger calls. Encryption does not make the call invisible to its participants, who can still see or hear what is shared.
