Facebook Is Moving New Video Posts Into Reels—What Changes and What Doesn’t

Meta announced in June 2025 that Facebook would move new video posts into the Reels publishing flow. That does not mean every clip must be short or vertical, and Meta said videos already shared on profiles and Pages would remain there. The rollout is gradual, with no publicly documented date for when every account will see the same interface.

What Meta’s video-to-Reels change means

Meta’s announcement describes a consolidation of Facebook’s video tools: people will no longer have to choose between uploading a conventional video and creating a Reel. New videos are intended to be shared as Reels, and the former Videos tab has been renamed the Reels tab. This is both a change to the publishing flow and to how Facebook labels and groups video—not simply a retroactive renaming of every video in a user’s archive. Meta announced the change on June 17, 2025, and its Help Center describes the Videos tab becoming the Reels tab.

“Reel” does not necessarily mean a brief, portrait-format clip. Meta says Reels can be any length or orientation. A landscape documentary excerpt, interview, tutorial, or event recording can therefore fall under the Reels label without being shortened or cropped into a vertical video. Facebook also remains a home for short video, long video, and Live content.

What happens to videos already posted?

Meta said videos people had already shared would remain on their profiles or Pages and continue to be eligible for distribution. The announcement does not say Facebook will delete old uploads, automatically re-upload them, or require creators to convert their archives. If a video seems harder to find, the renamed tab, profile layout, or other interface changes may be responsible; Meta’s statement is about preservation on profiles and Pages, not a guarantee that every old video will appear in exactly the same place on every surface.

  • Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the camera cover.

What Facebook users may notice

  • A different tab label: You may see Reels where you previously saw Videos. The Reels area is not necessarily limited to short clips.
  • A consolidated upload flow: The separate choice between a video post and a Reel is intended to go away for new posts as the change reaches an account.
  • An audience prompt: Meta says audience controls remain available and is unifying default audience settings for Feed posts and Reels. Check the audience selector before posting; do not assume a new Reel is automatically public.
  • Different interfaces across accounts: Meta described a gradual global rollout for profiles and Pages, but has not published a universal completion date. Labels and options may vary by account, location, app version, device, or publishing surface.

Meta said this product consolidation would not itself change which videos Facebook recommends: recommendations remain personalized. That statement is not a promise that reach will stay fixed. Ranking systems and the broader video experience can change for other reasons, and Meta reported separate Feed and video-ranking improvements in late 2025. Those company-reported results should not be read as a guarantee that a video will gain views simply because it is now labeled a Reel.

What creators and Pages should do

The immediate practical change is mainly about workflow, not the shape of the video. Creators can keep producing long-form or landscape material where it serves the story. A few checks can prevent avoidable publishing problems:

  1. Check the audience setting each time. Confirm whether the post is Public, for Friends, or limited to another available audience before publishing.
  2. Review the result on the surfaces that matter. A source video’s orientation and length do not guarantee identical presentation in Feed, fullscreen viewing, a profile, or the Reels area.
  3. Keep source files and captions. Back up original footage and text so you can correct a post or adapt it for another surface without losing the master.
  4. Use original or meaningfully transformed material. Meta’s March 2026 guidance says content filmed or produced by the creator or the owner of a Page or profile is considered original. Third-party material may qualify when accompanied by substantial new information, analysis, or storytelling. Reposts, passive reactions, and minor edits—such as adding borders, captions, or changing speed—may be treated as unoriginal and deprioritized.
  5. Check creator tools rather than guessing about performance. Page managers can review their publishing and performance information in Meta’s tools; eligible creators should check the Professional Dashboard for monetization access and status.

Meta says it may reduce recommendations or monetization for creators who continue primarily posting unoriginal material, while appeals remain available. The new label is not a workaround for content or rights rules. Use footage, music, and images you own or are authorized to use.

Reach and monetization: a Reel label is not a guarantee

Facebook’s Content Monetization program covers eligible Reels as well as longer videos, Stories, photos, and text posts, so placing video publishing under the Reels umbrella does not by itself rule out long-form monetization. Classification is not the same as eligibility, though: access, policy compliance, audience, and performance still matter. In its March 2026 announcement, Meta said Content Monetization was invite-only and creators could express interest through the Facebook app’s Professional Dashboard → Monetization → Content Monetization path. Availability can vary, and not every creator will see the same option.

  • Great sound anywhere. Listen to music with a speaker that can fill any room. Doubles as a portable Bluetooth speaker around the home.

Meta reported that it paid creators nearly $3 billion in 2025, up 35% year over year, and that about 60% of its total creator payouts went to Reels. These are Meta’s own company figures, not independently verified earnings benchmarks or a promise of what an individual creator can earn. The company’s original-content guidance is also relevant: a Reel label alone does not make reused content eligible or likely to be recommended.

What remains unclear

Meta explicitly named profiles and Pages in its rollout description. The public announcement does not establish that every video shared in every Group, every cross-post from Instagram, or every post made through a third-party tool follows an identical flow. Meta also did not spell out whether live broadcasts, Live replays, or videos created from streams receive the same treatment. It says Facebook continues to support Live video, but that is not enough to conclude that all Live content becomes a Reel.

Portal from Facebook. Smart, Hands-Free Video Calling with Alexa Built-in (Gen 1)
  • Move and talk freely with Smart Camera: With Smart Camera, you don’t have to worry about being out of frame. Whether you’re moving around the kitchen, prepping dinner or chasing the kids through the living room, Smart Camera adjusts to follow the action. And as more people enter a room, Smart Camera automatically widens to keep everyone in view, so you don’t miss a moment
  • Private by design: Facebook doesn't listen to, view or keep the contents of your Portal video calls. Calls on Portal are encrypted, so conversations stay between you and those you're calling. You can also completely disable the camera and microphone with a single tap, or block the camera lens with the camera cover provided
  • Connect with friends, even if they don't have Portal: Easily call friends and family on Messenger — calls can be made seamlessly to and from smartphones and tablets. And you can bring up to six other people into a group call
  • Alexa built-in: Portal has Alexa built-in, so you can ask a question, set a timer, add items to your shopping list, control your smart home or more. Just ask
  • Experience more together: With Portal, story time will never be the same. With music, animation and augmented reality effects, Portal lets you become some of your children’s favorite characters as you read along to well-loved stories. And if friends or family also have Portal, you can listen to your favorite music together as if you were in the same room, without delays or feedback

Likewise, the available official language does not confirm a date when every account worldwide will be migrated, or that every older video will appear in the same Reels surfaces. If your interface still offers a separate video option—or your Page, Group, or publishing tool behaves differently—that does not establish a different global policy; it may reflect rollout or surface-specific behavior.

Bottom line for documentary makers and viewers

Think of this as Facebook consolidating new video publishing under the Reels name, not as a mandate to turn every documentary, interview, or long recording into a short vertical clip. Existing profile and Page videos are meant to remain available, long and landscape formats are supported, and audience controls still matter. For creators, the sensible response is to verify the audience and presentation of each post, keep a copy of original work, and treat reach and monetization as dependent on eligibility and content quality—not as automatic benefits of a new label.
