F9: The Fast Saga is the ninth mainline film in Universal’s Fast & Furious series. Released in 2021, it brings director Justin Lin back to the franchise and centers on Dom Toretto’s estranged brother, Jakob, played by John Cena. The film combines the series’ recurring ideas of loyalty and family with international espionage, giant magnets, rocket-powered cars, and one of its most extreme escalations yet.

It runs approximately 2 hours 23 minutes in its theatrical version, carries a PG-13 rating, and has a separate Director’s Cut running approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. This guide covers the premise, cast, spoiler-sensitive story details, production, franchise order, home-video editions, music, and box-office performance.

What is F9: The Fast Saga about?

F9 opens with Dom Toretto attempting to live quietly with Letty and his young son, Brian. That retirement does not last. When an aircraft connected to the intelligence operative known as Mr. Nobody crashes, Dom’s team is drawn into a worldwide race to recover technology associated with Project Aries.

The mission becomes personal when the crew discovers that the operation involves Jakob Toretto, Dom and Mia’s estranged younger brother. Jakob is not simply another opponent: his history with Dom reaches back to the Toretto family’s troubled past and the events surrounding their father’s death. The resulting conflict gives the film its emotional foundation, even as the action expands far beyond the street-racing origins of the franchise.

Charlize Theron’s Cipher remains an important strategic threat, while Otto serves as the principal human collaborator behind the Aries operation. The film moves between present-day action and flashbacks that explain how Jakob and Dom became separated and why their resentment lasted so long.

F9 story explained: spoilers

Spoilers follow.

The film’s backstory is built around the death of Jack Toretto, Dom and Jakob’s father. As teenagers, the brothers respond to the tragedy in different ways. Dom’s anger toward Jakob is connected to the belief that Jakob’s actions contributed to their father’s fatal crash during a race. Jakob is subsequently pushed out of the family, creating the estrangement that defines their adult relationship.

In the present, Jakob is working with Otto on Project Aries, a powerful technology capable of accessing and weaponizing global computer systems. Cipher is also involved, although her imprisonment means that she manipulates events from confinement rather than operating as a conventional field antagonist. Dom’s team must recover the Aries components before the technology can be activated.

The film also reverses one of the franchise’s most important apparent deaths: Han Lue is alive. Han’s survival is connected to Mr. Nobody’s intelligence operation and to the earlier events surrounding Deckard Shaw. His return reunites him with Dom’s crew and restores a character whose apparent death had shaped the series’ continuity for several films.

Dom and Jakob eventually confront the truth about their father’s death. The brothers’ reconciliation does not erase their history, but it reframes the incident as a source of shared trauma rather than a simple betrayal. Jakob ultimately turns against Otto’s plan, helping Dom’s team prevent the Aries system from being fully used.

The climax pushes the franchise’s speculative action to its most openly extravagant point. Tej and Roman participate in a rocket-car mission that reaches the edge of space, while the rest of the team attempts to stop the Aries satellite-based operation. The sequence is intentionally more comic-book spectacle than realistic driving drama, illustrating how far the series has moved from its original street-racing premise.

Cast and characters

  • Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto: Dom is the crew’s leader, a skilled driver, and a father trying to protect his quieter life while confronting his unresolved relationship with Jakob.
  • Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz: Dom’s partner and one of the team’s most capable field operatives. Letty is also central to Dom’s attempt to balance family life with the dangers of his former world.
  • John Cena as Jakob Toretto: Dom and Mia’s estranged brother. Jakob provides the film’s main family conflict and is introduced as a highly trained driver and operative with a painful history.
  • Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto: Dom and Jakob’s sister. Her return reconnects the present-day crew with the Toretto family’s past.
  • Tyrese Gibson as Roman Pearce: A member of the crew whose bravado, skepticism, and comic reactions provide much of the ensemble’s lighter tone.
  • Chris “Ludacris” Bridges as Tej Parker: The team’s technical and engineering-focused member, especially important during the film’s larger mechanical set pieces.
  • Nathalie Emmanuel as Ramsey: A technology specialist who has become an increasingly integrated part of Dom’s team.
  • Sung Kang as Han Lue: Han’s return is one of the film’s major continuity developments and a major reason the character is central to pre-release and post-release discussion.
  • Charlize Theron as Cipher: The cyberterrorist who continues to influence the conflict while imprisoned.
  • Kurt Russell as Mr. Nobody: An intelligence operative whose crashed plane and missing device initiate the central mission.
  • Anna Sawai as Elle: A character connected to the Aries technology and the film’s historical backstory.

Supporting and returning performers include Lucas Black, Shad Moss, Helen Mirren, and Jason Tobin. The cast combines long-standing franchise characters with John Cena’s new role as the Toretto family’s missing member.

What makes F9 different from earlier Fast films?

It turns family history into the central mystery

Family has always been part of Dom’s vocabulary, but F9 makes the Toretto family itself the main unresolved mystery. The movie spends substantial time on Dom and Jakob’s childhood, their father, and the emotional consequences of being separated. That gives the film a more melodramatic structure than a straightforward team-versus-villain adventure.

It brings Han back into the active story

Han’s apparent death had been a defining continuity point in the series. His return is not treated as a minor cameo; it restores him to the active ensemble and revisits the circumstances that kept him away. Viewers unfamiliar with the earlier films may find the emotional significance reduced, so watching the previous entries first is recommended.

It embraces spectacular impossibility

The franchise had already moved from illegal races to armored trucks, submarines, covert missions, and global terrorism. F9 goes further with magnetic-vehicle stunts, increasingly improbable escapes, a rocket-powered car, and a space-adjacent finale. The film’s appeal depends partly on accepting that escalation as the series’ chosen style rather than evaluating every sequence as grounded automotive action.

It emphasizes practical stunt work without claiming everything was practical

Universal’s home-entertainment materials highlight the production’s effort to stage major action in-camera and practically. The bonus feature Practically Fast explores that emphasis, alongside material about the cars and large-scale stunts. That should not be read as a claim that every major stunt or effect was performed practically: F9, like a modern effects-heavy action film, combines physical production with visual effects.

Who directed F9?

Justin Lin directed F9: The Fast Saga and co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Casey. Lin’s return is significant because he previously directed The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6. He therefore returned to a franchise he had helped move from relatively contained racing stories toward large-scale ensemble action.

The listed producers include Neal H. Moritz, Vin Diesel, Justin Lin, Jeffrey Kirschenbaum, Joe Roth, Clayton Townsend, and Samantha Vincent. Universal Pictures distributed the film.

When was F9 released?

The film’s earliest listed international releases began on May 19, 2021, followed by its United States theatrical release on June 25, 2021. It is rated PG-13 and has an approximate theatrical runtime of 2 hours 23 minutes.

Home entertainment followed across digital, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD. The physical release date was September 21, 2021. Universal lists the Director’s Cut at approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.

Where does F9 fit in the Fast & Furious viewing order?

For a first viewing, release order is generally the clearest choice. The franchise’s reveals involving Han, Deckard Shaw, and the Toretto family were designed to develop across the release sequence. The mainline films leading to F9 are:

  1. The Fast and the Furious
  2. 2 Fast 2 Furious
  3. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
  4. Fast & Furious
  5. Fast Five
  6. Fast & Furious 6
  7. Furious 7
  8. The Fate of the Furious
  9. F9: The Fast Saga

The 2019 spin-off Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw can be watched after The Fate of the Furious and before F9 if you want to include the franchise’s release-era side story.

  • This refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, and may arrive in a generic box

The chronological order is less straightforward because the series later repositioned Tokyo Drift within the broader timeline. One commonly listed chronology through F9 is:

  1. The Fast and the Furious
  2. 2 Fast 2 Furious
  3. Fast & Furious
  4. Fast Five
  5. Fast & Furious 6
  6. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
  7. Furious 7
  8. The Fate of the Furious
  9. Hobbs & Shaw
  10. F9: The Fast Saga

Chronological order can be enjoyable on a rewatch, but it changes the context of Han’s story and some of the series’ intended reveals. The release order is the better default for someone seeing the saga for the first time.

Which physical edition of F9 is best?

For collectors and home-cinema viewers, the F9 The Fast Saga 4K UHD Blu-ray is the most complete physical option documented by Universal. It includes the theatrical film, the Director’s Cut, and bonus material including a gag reel and featurettes such as F9: All In, Practically Fast, and Shifting Priorities.

The 4K UHD release uses a widescreen 2.39:1 presentation and lists a BD-100 layer. The accompanying Blu-ray technical information lists a BD-50 layer. Audio tracks, subtitles, packaging, digital-copy terms, and included discs can vary by market or individual retail listing, so check the current product description before buying.

A standard Blu-ray/DVD edition is the more practical alternative for viewers without a 4K-capable player or television. It may also be preferable when price or compatibility matters more than the additional presentation and Director’s Cut. Current inventory, price, seller, packaging, and digital-copy availability should be verified at the retailer rather than assumed from the original 2021 release announcement.

F9 soundtrack and score

The film has two distinct music releases:

  • The official motion-picture soundtrack: A 2021 compilation of 14 contemporary songs with a reported running time of approximately 39 minutes. Listed tracks include “Fast Lane,” “Lane Switcha,” “Hit Em Hard,” “I Won,” “Rapido,” “Breathe,” “Real,” “Bussin Bussin,” “Furiosa,” “Ride Da Night,” “Bushido,” “Speed It Up,” “Mala,” and “Exotic Race.”
  • The original motion-picture score: Brian Tyler’s instrumental score, released separately in 2021. Its listed tracks include “Fast 9,” “Fallen,” “Visions Of The Past,” “The Race,” “Car vs. Jet,” “Project Aries,” “Dom vs. Cipher,” and “Toretto.”

These are not interchangeable releases: the soundtrack is a song compilation, while Tyler’s score is the dramatic instrumental music written for the film. Digital availability may differ from physical availability, and a physical CD or vinyl edition should not be assumed without a current product listing.

How much money did F9 make?

Box Office Mojo lists F9 with a United States opening of $70,043,165, a domestic total of $173,005,945, an international total of $553,223,556, and a worldwide theatrical gross of $726,229,501.

But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.

Those figures are box-office grosses, not profit. They do not represent the film’s net earnings after production, marketing, distribution, theater splits, or other costs. The domestic, international, and worldwide totals should also not be treated as interchangeable measures of performance.

Is F9 the final Fast film?

No. F9 is the ninth principal installment, not the final film in the franchise. Later entries exist, so it should be understood as a late-series chapter that sets up further developments rather than as the saga’s conclusion.

Where can you watch F9?

Streaming, rental, and purchase availability changes by country, service, subscription tier, and date. An older franchise guide or release announcement is not a permanent guarantee that the film remains available on a particular platform. Check a current market-specific availability listing before publication or viewing. Physical editions remain the more stable option for collectors, but even those can vary in stock and packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Han really alive in F9?

Yes. F9 reveals that Han Lue survived the events that had appeared to kill him and brings him back into Dom’s active team. The explanation connects to Mr. Nobody’s intelligence operation and earlier franchise events.

Is F9 based on a true story?

No. F9 is a fictional action film. Its cars, espionage plot, family drama, and space-adjacent action are elements of the franchise’s heightened fictional world.

Does F9 have a Director’s Cut?

Yes. Universal lists a Director’s Cut running approximately 2 hours 30 minutes, compared with the theatrical version’s approximate 2 hours 23 minutes. The 4K UHD release includes both versions.

Should I watch Tokyo Drift before F9?

For a first-time franchise viewing, release order is usually best. Tokyo Drift originally appeared third but was later repositioned in the internal chronology, and Han’s story carries more impact when the films are watched in release sequence.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line: F9: The Fast Saga is best understood as the franchise at its most unabashedly extravagant: a family-centered story about Dom and Jakob surrounded by global espionage, practical-stunt spectacle, Han’s return, and a rocket-car finale. Watch it after the earlier films in release order, and choose the 4K UHD edition if you want both cuts and the fullest documented bonus package.
