The Junior controversy and Lidia Matiss lawsuit
What Matiss alleged
Lidia Matiss alleged that Junior attacked her in 2017 while she was visiting her mother at an office associated with Millan. Media accounts of the complaint described allegations that Junior was roaming unsupervised and unleashed, that the attack caused serious injuries to Matiss’s leg, and that the injuries ended or substantially damaged her competitive gymnastics prospects.
Those details come from allegations in civil litigation and reporting about the complaint. They should not be presented as findings by a judge or jury. A complaint sets out one party’s version of events; it is not proof that the allegations were ultimately established.
The reported settlement
Later reporting said the dispute settled out of court and that the terms were confidential. No public merits verdict was identified in the research reviewed for this article.
That wording matters legally. A confidential settlement generally resolves the parties’ dispute without publicly deciding which side would have prevailed at trial. It does not establish that all of Matiss’s allegations were true, but it also does not establish that they were false. Unless the parties or a court publicly disclose more, the responsible conclusion is simply that the litigation reportedly ended through a confidential settlement.
Do not confuse Lidia Matiss’s case with Lisa Matiss’s docket entry
A separate Los Angeles County docket involving Lisa Matiss, Lidia’s mother, shows a dismissal with prejudice on April 20, 2021, following settlement. That entry is not, by itself, proof of the disposition of Lidia Matiss’s personal-injury claims. The two matters should not be merged to create a more definite conclusion than the available records support.
The Queen Latifah dog allegation
The allegation involving Queen Latifah’s dog was part of the narrative described in coverage of the Matiss complaint, rather than a separately adjudicated public finding located in this research.

According to reporting on the complaint, Matiss alleged that Junior killed one of Queen Latifah’s dogs during or around a training-related encounter and that Millan or his staff tried to characterize the death as a car accident. Millan denied that Junior killed the dog and disputed the account.
No reliable source reviewed here supplies a public statement from Queen Latifah confirming the allegation, and no court judgment establishing it was found. The accurate formulation is therefore:
- The lawsuit alleged that Junior killed Queen Latifah’s dog.
- Millan denied that accusation.
- The public record reviewed here does not establish either the alleged killing or an intentional cover-up as proven fact.
It would be inaccurate to say that Junior “definitely killed” the dog or that Millan “covered it up” without an adjudicated finding or reliable independent evidence establishing those claims.
What happened in the Alison Bitney and Gus lawsuit?
The Gus case was an earlier and separate civil lawsuit. In February 2015, Alison Bitney sued Millan and parties connected with the Dog Psychology Center after a pit bull named Gus allegedly attacked her at a friend’s home in September 2014.
Courthouse News reported that Bitney alleged severe arm injuries, including deep lacerations, fractures, and lasting loss of sensation or function. Her complaint reportedly also alleged that Gus had a prior history of dangerous behavior and had been released from Millan’s facility before rehabilitation was complete.
The Dog Psychology Center disputed that characterization. A representative said Gus had not been trained directly by Millan, that the dog had been removed from the center against the trainer’s advice before rehabilitation was complete, and that the center followed bite-protocol procedures after the attack.

The research reviewed for this article did not locate a reliable final judgment, settlement announcement, or other definitive public disposition of Bitney’s civil claims. That does not mean the case necessarily remained active indefinitely; it means the final outcome was not established by the accessible sources reviewed. The careful description is a historical lawsuit involving disputed facts and an unresolved public-record disposition—not a case in which Millan was publicly shown to be liable or cleared on the merits.
The 2016 pig incident was not a pit bull case
A separate controversy arose from a 2016 episode of Cesar 911. The program showed a dog attacking and injuring a pig during a behavior-modification session. The incident prompted an investigation by Los Angeles County animal-control authorities.
Contemporary reporting said Millan was cleared and did not face animal-cruelty charges. This is the controversy for which “cleared” is an appropriate shorthand in the sources reviewed—but it should not be extended to the Matiss allegations or the Gus lawsuit. Those were separate civil matters, with different facts and different public-record outcomes.
The incident also drew criticism from animal-behavior professionals. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior argued that deliberately eliciting aggressive behavior so it can be corrected puts the target animal at risk and is inconsistent with evidence-based humane training. That professional criticism is separate from the legal question of whether prosecutors or animal-control authorities brought charges.

Why the training controversy is still active
The legal disputes are only one part of Millan’s continuing controversy. The broader question is whether the methods associated with his television persona are safe, humane, and consistent with modern behavioral science.
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s current public position recommends reward-based training for all dog training and behavior modification. It opposes aversive tools and methods, including electronic collars, prong collars, choke chains, leash corrections, and physical or psychological punishment. AVSAB also cautions against using dominance, “alpha,” or “pack leader” theories as the foundation for behavior modification.

That position does not prove that every technique Millan has ever used is ineffective, nor does it establish that every television segment represents his complete current practice. Television also compresses complicated behavior cases into short, edited narratives. But AVSAB’s guidance does establish a significant professional disagreement with the aversive and dominance-based framework commonly associated with Millan’s public brand.
Readers who want to examine Millan’s philosophy in his own published words can consult the Cesar’s Way book. It is best treated as a record of Millan’s consumer-facing framework—not as a substitute for current veterinary-behavior guidance, a veterinary diagnosis, or individualized advice from a qualified behavior professional.

Continued activity is not evidence that the historical allegations were proven or disproven; it shows that the brand and its training philosophy remain publicly available despite the controversies.
Criminal status, civil status, and professional criticism are different questions
Three kinds of “clearing” are often confused in discussions of this subject:
- Criminal clearance: authorities decide not to charge, or charges are dismissed or rejected. The pig-related investigation was reported as ending without animal-cruelty charges.
- Civil liability: a court determines whether a defendant owes damages, or the parties resolve the claim privately. A settlement does not equal a verdict, and a lack of a public verdict does not prove the defendant was vindicated.
- Professional or scientific acceptance: veterinary and behavior organizations evaluate methods against current standards and evidence. AVSAB’s position remains critical of aversive and dominance-based approaches regardless of whether a particular lawsuit produced a judgment.
Millan’s critics may view the lawsuits and television incidents as evidence of an unsafe philosophy. Millan and representatives connected with his organizations have disputed important allegations and descriptions of responsibility. Both statements can be accurately reported without claiming that a court proved one side’s entire narrative.

The Queen Latifah dog story remains an allegation within the Matiss litigation narrative, accompanied by Millan’s denial and no independent public adjudication located here. The most durable controversy is now methodological. Current AVSAB guidance recommends reward-based training and rejects aversive and dominance-based techniques, while Millan’s brand continues to present pack-leadership-oriented education. That disagreement remains active even though the best-known civil case reportedly ended privately and the pig investigation ended without charges.
