Fallout’s Vaults are underground shelters built by Vault-Tec, but they do not all serve the same purpose in the story. Some are homes or starting points; others are connected to experiments, such as Vault 111’s study of long-term cryostasis. Their different roles let the games and TV series tell intimate stories against the larger backdrop of a nuclear wasteland.
What are the Vaults in Fallout?
The Vaults are a recurring part of Fallout’s setting: underground shelters associated with Vault-Tec, the corporation behind them. Bethesda calls the shelters “as much a part of Fallout as the wasteland itself” in its article about the first season of the TV series.
The promise of shelter is only part of their story. Bethesda’s examples show that Vaults can be homes, places from which residents set out into the world, or sites of study. Vault 111 is explicitly described as a long-term cryostasis study; that fact should not be generalized to every Vault. The contrast between protection and the systems built around Vault life is one way the stories connect personal experience to the wider postwar setting.
How do Vault 111, Vault 76, and Vault 33 differ?
These three official examples illustrate the range of roles without serving as a complete catalogue of the franchise’s Vaults.

When do the Vault stories take place?
Bethesda’s official timeline dates the Great War to 2077. It places the emergence of Fallout 76’s Vault 76 dwellers 25 years later, in 2102, the game’s Reclamation Day setting. Do the TV series and games tell the same Vault story?
The games and TV series share the Fallout universe, but the examples above are distinct stories, not chapters of one Vault narrative. The games introduce Vaults such as 111 and 76 through their own settings and player experiences; the series identifies Lucy as a resident of Vault 33. Bethesda’s cross-media discussion draws connections between the series and themes in the games, while treating Vault 33 as the show’s own example.
