Its 10-episode first season premiered on Prime Video on July 9, 2025, and Amazon renewed it for Season 2 on October 6, 2025. No Season 2 premiere date or episode count has been announced in the information available here.
What is the new Bosch: Legacy spinoff?
Ballard follows Renée Ballard, an LAPD detective who leads cold-case investigations. Amazon describes the show as a Bosch: Legacy spinoff and says retired detective Harry Bosch, played by Titus Welliver, helps Ballard with her cases. The character first appeared in the Bosch: Legacy finale before moving into her own series.
It is the first spinoff in Michael Connelly’s on-screen world that is not directly focused on Bosch himself, according to Amazon. The series is based on Connelly’s novels featuring Renée Ballard; the available official information does not identify one specific book as the direct source for the show.
When did Ballard premiere, and how many episodes are there?
All 10 episodes of Season 1 debuted together on Prime Video on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, according to Amazon’s series announcement. Amazon says the series is streaming on Prime Video; availability and subscription terms can vary by territory.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Ballard the same project as Bosch: Start of Watch?
No. Ballard is the released Renée Ballard-led spinoff. Bosch: Start of Watch is a separate, reportedly developing prequel about a younger Harry Bosch. A July 7, 2026 TechRadar report said Cameron Monaghan would play young Bosch and Omari Hardwick was also attached; it did not report a release date. Those details are secondary reporting, not an official MGM+ announcement, and the prequel’s platform and schedule are not confirmed by the sources cited here.
