Short answer: The original Yellowstone cast is led by Kevin Costner as ranch patriarch John Dutton III, with Luke Grimes as Kayce, Kelly Reilly as Beth, Wes Bentley as Jamie, Cole Hauser as Rip, Kelsey Asbille as Monica and Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater. Jefferson White, Brecken Merrill, Forrie J. Smith, Denim Richards, Ian Bohen, Jen Landon, Ryan Bingham and Mo Brings Plenty form much of the ranch and reservation ensemble.
The original series is complete after five seasons. As of August 12, 2026, the wider franchise also includes Marshals, centered on Kayce Dutton, and Dutton Ranch, following Beth, Rip and Carter in Texas. This guide separates the original cast from the current spin-off casts so it is clear who played whom, how the central relationships fit together and where the franchise stands now.
Spoiler note: This is a spoiler-light cast guide. It explains the family structure, character roles and major relationships, but avoids detailed revelations about the original series finale.
Yellowstone cast at a glance
The original series revolves around the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, the Dutton family’s effort to preserve it and the competing interests surrounding the land. The main conflict involves developers, political operators, neighboring ranchers and the fictional Broken Rock Indian Reservation.

The Dutton family
Kevin Costner as John Dutton III
Kevin Costner plays John Dutton III, the owner of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch and head of the modern Dutton family. John is simultaneously a rancher, a father and a political operator. His central objective is to keep the ranch intact, even when protecting it requires choices that put his family, political career and relationships under pressure.
John’s authority shapes nearly every part of the ensemble. His children do not agree about how the ranch should be defended, and the people who work for him often treat the ranch as more than a place of employment. John’s relationships with Beth, Kayce and Jamie are especially important to understanding the series’ family conflict.
Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton
Luke Grimes plays Kayce Dutton, John’s youngest son. Kayce is a former U.S. Navy SEAL who becomes involved in ranching and livestock work while trying to balance the demands of his birth family with the needs of his own household.
Kayce occupies a particularly important position in the story. He is a Dutton, but his marriage to Monica Long Dutton connects him to the Broken Rock community. He is also the father of Tate, making him part of both the ranch’s future and the next generation of the Dutton family. His loyalties are repeatedly divided between John, Monica, Tate and the competing communities surrounding the ranch.

Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton
Kelly Reilly plays Beth Dutton, John’s daughter and the family’s most aggressive financial and corporate tactician. Beth returns to the ranch prepared to fight for her father and is usually more comfortable with corporate battles, threats and strategic maneuvering than with compromise.
Her loyalty to John is fierce but complicated. Her relationship with Jamie is one of the most important sources of tension within the Dutton family, while her marriage to Rip Wheeler provides the series with one of its defining romantic relationships. Beth is not simply the family’s business expert: she is also one of its most emotionally volatile and protective members.
Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton
Wes Bentley plays Jamie Dutton, John’s adopted son, a lawyer and a man with political ambitions. Jamie wants his father’s approval and is drawn to the power of public office, but his professional goals repeatedly collide with the family’s demands.
Jamie’s position is different from that of the other Dutton children because he is both an insider and an outsider. He is educated, legally trained and politically useful to the family, yet his need for recognition creates recurring conflict with John and Beth. His story represents the tension between the modern political system and the Duttons’ deeply personal approach to protecting the ranch.
Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler
Cole Hauser plays Rip Wheeler, the ranch’s fiercely loyal enforcer and one of John Dutton’s most dependable employees. Rip’s loyalty is based on service, personal history and a willingness to do the work others will not do.

Rip is also Beth’s husband, and their relationship is central to both characters. At the ranch, he helps maintain order among the cowboys and takes an interest in passing ranch knowledge to Jimmy. In the later franchise story, Rip and Beth relocate to Texas with Carter in Dutton Ranch.
Kelsey Asbille as Monica Long Dutton
Kelsey Asbille plays Monica Long Dutton, Kayce’s wife and a member of the Broken Rock community. Her marriage to Kayce creates a personal connection between the Dutton family and the reservation, but it does not erase the larger disputes over land, identity and community.
Monica’s perspective makes the family conflict more complicated than a simple struggle between good and bad sides. She is connected to Kayce and Tate, to her own community and to the consequences of the Duttons’ decisions. Paramount’s character material frames Monica and Kayce’s relationship as a romance strained by conflict between their families.
Dave Annable as Lee Dutton
Dave Annable plays Lee Dutton, John’s eldest son. Lee is important to the original family structure, particularly early in the series, even though his role is concentrated near the beginning rather than spread evenly across all five seasons.
Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton
Brecken Merrill plays Tate Dutton, Kayce and Monica’s son and John’s grandson. Tate represents the next generation of the Dutton family and gives the ranch conflict a direct personal stake for Kayce and Monica.
Finn Little as Carter
Finn Little plays Carter, a young ward taken in by Beth and Rip. Carter becomes part of their household and the ranch environment, and his relationship with Beth and Rip continues into Dutton Ranch.
Rip, Beth and the ranch family
The Yellowstone is not sustained by the Duttons alone. Its working-cowboy ensemble gives the series its day-to-day ranch perspective and shows how John’s land is maintained, defended and passed on through practical knowledge.

| Forrie J. Smith | Lloyd Pierce | A veteran ranch hand and an experienced presence in the bunkhouse |
| Denim Richards | Colby Mayfield | A ranch hand who is part of the working-cowboy group |
| Ian Bohen | Ryan | A ranch hand and livestock agent |
| Jen Landon | Teeter | A distinctive bunkhouse ranch hand known for her unusual speech and loyalty |

| Jefferson White | Jimmy Hurdstrom | A newcomer whose progression from instability to greater cowboy competence is one of the show’s developmental arcs |
| Mo Brings Plenty | Mo | A trusted adviser within Thomas Rainwater’s circle |
Jefferson White as Jimmy Hurdstrom
Jimmy is one of the clearest examples of a character being given a chance to change his life. John brings him into the ranch world, where Jimmy initially has little understanding of the work, its dangers or its expectations.
His storyline is built around learning. Jimmy’s growth from an inexperienced outsider into a more capable cowboy gives the bunkhouse ensemble a point-of-view character and adds a more developmental thread to the otherwise high-stakes family and land conflicts.
Forrie J. Smith as Lloyd Pierce
Lloyd is a veteran ranch hand whose experience gives him authority among the bunkhouse cowboys. He represents the accumulated knowledge and traditions of the working ranch, and his presence helps anchor the younger or less experienced members of the crew.
Denim Richards as Colby Mayfield and Ian Bohen as Ryan
Colby and Ryan are both important members of the ranch’s working ensemble. Colby is part of the bunkhouse crew, while Ryan combines ranch-hand duties with livestock-agent work. Together, characters such as Colby and Ryan broaden the story beyond the Dutton family and show the specialized labor required to operate the ranch.
Jen Landon as Teeter
Teeter is one of the most recognizable bunkhouse characters because of her distinctive way of speaking and her loyalty to the ranch. Jen Landon’s performance makes Teeter stand out within an ensemble that includes veteran cowboys, newcomers and people with complicated pasts.
Ryan Bingham as Walker
Walker is a musician and former convict who becomes connected with the ranch. His musical identity makes him unusual within the bunkhouse, while his past gives him a different relationship to the rules and loyalties that govern ranch life.
Thomas Rainwater, Monica and the Broken Rock conflict
Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater
Gil Birmingham plays Thomas Rainwater, chairman of the fictional Broken Rock Reservation. Rainwater is one of John Dutton’s main political and cultural opponents, but reducing him to a conventional villain misses the purpose of his character.
Rainwater’s goal is to protect and elevate his people while contesting Dutton control of the land. He is determined to preserve cultural values and challenge the power structure represented by the ranch. His conflict with John is therefore about land and political control, but also about history, sovereignty and competing ideas of what the region’s future should be.

Mo Brings Plenty as Mo
Mo is a trusted adviser in Rainwater’s circle. His role provides a close connection to Rainwater’s decisions and to the Broken Rock perspective. Mo also appears in Marshals, making him one of the performers who connects the original series with the current franchise.
Monica’s place in the ensemble is equally important. As a member of the Broken Rock community and Kayce’s wife, she makes the land conflict personal rather than merely political. Kayce’s position between the Duttons and Monica’s community is one of the show’s central sources of tension.
Corporate, environmental and political opponents
The Duttons face more than one kind of adversary. The show’s conflicts also include developers, corporate figures, environmental interests and political operators. Several recurring performers are particularly associated with these storylines:
Rank #4
- Jacki Weaver as Caroline Warner: an important corporate figure in the struggle surrounding the ranch and its future.
- Piper Perabo as Summer Higgins: a figure connected to the show’s environmental and political conflicts.
- Dawn Olivieri as Sarah Atwood: a significant presence in the political and corporate pressures facing the Dutton family.
The exact billing and prominence of recurring performers can vary by season and episode. A cast guide should not describe every named performer as a series regular unless a season-specific source supports that classification. Paramount’s season-five announcement, for example, identified a broad returning ensemble and specifically said Jen Landon and Kathryn Kelly were elevated to series regulars for that season.

The relationships below are the quickest way to understand the original ensemble without memorizing every character:
- John Dutton III is the patriarch and controls the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.
- Lee, Beth, Kayce and Jamie are identified as John’s children; Jamie is his adopted son.
- Beth is married to Rip Wheeler, the ranch’s loyal enforcer.
- Kayce is John’s youngest son and is married to Monica Long Dutton.
- Kayce and Monica are the parents of Tate Dutton, John’s grandson.
- Carter becomes part of Beth and Rip’s household and continues with them in Dutton Ranch.
- Thomas Rainwater leads the fictional Broken Rock Reservation and is a principal opponent of John’s control of the land.
- Jimmy, Lloyd, Colby, Ryan, Walker and Teeter make up much of the ranch’s bunkhouse and working-cowboy world.
Where are the Yellowstone actors now?
The original series is finished after five seasons, but the franchise has continued with separate shows. The two current series should not be treated as one enlarged cast list: each has its own story and its own credited ensemble.
Marshals: Luke Grimes leads a Kayce-centered series
Marshals is a CBS drama centered on Kayce Dutton. The current franchise guide says it premiered on March 1, 2026. In the new series, Kayce joins an elite U.S. Marshals unit in Montana.
| Actor | Character |
|---|---|
| Luke Grimes | Kayce Dutton |
| Logan Marshall-Green | Pete Calvin |
| Arielle Kebbel | Belle Skinner |
| Ash Santos | Andrea Cruz |
| Tatanka Means | Miles Kittle |
| Mo Brings Plenty | Mo |
| Brecken Merrill | Tate Dutton |
| Gil Birmingham | Thomas Rainwater |
The returning characters in this cast are significant: Kayce remains the lead, while Tate, Rainwater and Mo carry parts of the original series’ family and Broken Rock connections into the new setting. The presence of those characters does not mean that the full original ranch ensemble appears in Marshals.

Dutton Ranch is a Paramount+ drama that follows Beth Dutton, Rip Wheeler and Carter after their relocation to Texas. The official guide says the series premiered on May 15, 2026, has a nine-episode first season and airs on Paramount+ and Paramount Network.

The recurring cast includes Berto Colón as Miguel and Hart Denton as Chet. The current Dutton Ranch cast guide lists Reilly, Hauser and Little in the continuing Beth-Rip-Carter storyline, but it should not be read as a complete list of every performer from the original Yellowstone.
What happened to Kevin Costner’s John Dutton?
John Dutton is played by Kevin Costner in the original series. The current cast guides supplied for Marshals and Dutton Ranch list their respective ensembles and do not include Costner. The safest way to describe the current franchise is therefore to identify John as the central patriarch of the completed original series, rather than to assume that every original cast member carries into a spin-off.

Availability depends on country, platform rights and the date of checking. For readers in the United States, Paramount’s franchise guide identifies Peacock as the streaming home of the original Yellowstone, not Paramount+. That distinction matters because the franchise now spans several shows and services.

If you want a permanent rewatch rather than relying on changing streaming rights, check the current listing for the Yellowstone complete series DVD or Blu-ray. Retail listings identify a complete set covering seasons one through five, but buyers should confirm the exact edition, region, included discs and current stock before ordering.

Fans looking for something connected to the show rather than a video edition can browse official Yellowstone merchandise through the Paramount Shop. How the ensemble makes the series work
Yellowstone is often marketed around the Dutton name, but the show’s cast is structured around several overlapping worlds:

- The ranch workforce: Rip, Lloyd, Jimmy, Colby, Ryan, Teeter and Walker, whose stories show the practical and personal demands of ranch life.
- The Broken Rock community: Rainwater and Mo, with Monica’s position linking that community to the Dutton family.
- The outside pressure: corporate, political and environmental figures who challenge the ranch’s ownership, influence or future.
That division also explains why a short answer naming only the Duttons is incomplete. John’s family provides the central drama, but the ranch hands and opposing communities give the story its wider social and political frame. It is also why cast lists should be labeled carefully: the principal original cast, recurring ranch performers and current spin-off actors are related to the franchise without being interchangeable.

The Bottom Line
The original Yellowstone cast is built around Kevin Costner’s John Dutton and the competing loyalties of Beth, Kayce, Jamie, Rip and Monica. The ranch hands, Broken Rock leaders and political opponents make the ensemble larger than the Dutton family alone. With the original five-season story complete, Luke Grimes’ Marshals and Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s Dutton Ranch now continue separate parts of that television universe.
