Janice Pariat’s Everything the Light Touches connects four travelers separated by centuries and continents through their journeys and attention to the natural world. Its central question is not simply where people are going, but how they learn to see—and whether a sense of home can emerge from that way of seeing.
What is Everything the Light Touches about?
Pariat’s literary and historical novel moves among four narrative strands: Shai in contemporary India; Evelyn in the early twentieth century; Johann Wolfgang von Goethe during his travels in Italy in the 1780s; and Carl Linnaeus on his 1732 expedition to Lapland. Their stories do not depend on the characters meeting. Travel, botany and changing ways of understanding nature provide the connections.
Shai leaves Delhi for her northeastern Indian home and a remote village associated with her childhood nanny. Kirkus’s plot summary describes the village as suffering the consequences of illegal uranium mining; this is part of the novel’s fictional setting, not evidence about present-day conditions. Evelyn, a Cambridge graduate, is drawn to Goethe’s botanical writing and travels toward the Lower Himalayas in pursuit of a botanical idea she associates with India. Goethe and Linnaeus appear in strands shaped by their historical journeys and interest in the natural world.
How do the four journeys connect?
The novel uses botany as more than a shared subject. It sets one way of knowing nature—sorting it into named, fixed parts—against an approach that looks for relationships, change and unity. The journeys let Pariat explore how people’s habits of observation shape what they believe the world to be, as well as how they understand their own place in it.

That tension also gives the book its reflection on belonging. Each strand has its own setting and circumstances, but the travelers’ encounters with nature link private searches for home or meaning to larger questions about how humans relate to the living world. The connections are thematic rather than a single, tightly interlocking adventure plot.
What kind of reading experience is it?
Expect an expansive, descriptive novel with several timelines and points of attention, rather than a fast, linear travel story. The Guardian’s Sana Goyal presents its travelers as linked by encounters with nature and quotes the line, “Not only to see new things but to see things in new ways.” Scroll’s Sayari Debnath quotes the novel: “The starting point must be to marvel at all things, even the most commonplace.” Together, those lines capture the book’s emphasis on observation.

Critical response has been mixed on how well the ambition holds together. Debnath calls the novel “vast, strange, and ambitious” and praises its writing, while saying its characters remained strangers to her and the plot became burdened by its ambitions. Kirkus likewise notes that not all chapters are equally engaging and that the relationships among characters can be difficult to follow. These are reviewers’ judgments, not a guarantee of how every reader will respond.
Who might enjoy the novel—and who might not?
- A good fit: readers drawn to literary or historical fiction, botanical ideas, ecological themes, colonial history, travel and richly descriptive prose.
- Consider before choosing it: readers who prefer one central protagonist, a brisk plot or clearly explained links among every narrative strand may find its structure less satisfying.
Kirkus classifies the novel as literary fiction, historical fiction and general fiction, and suggests it may interest historical-fiction readers. The book’s scope and layered structure are part of its appeal, but they also help explain why reviewers differ on how successfully its strands cohere.
