For most players looking for the best WWE game on PlayStation 2, WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain is the strongest pick: it combines distinctive match mechanics, a substantial roster and lasting replay appeal. This ranking covers PS2 games released under WWF or WWE branding, including arcade-style spin-offs rather than only the main SmackDown series. It is a critical ranking, not an official or consensus list, and it is not a verified catalog of every regional release.

How this ranking works

The order weighs match controls and pacing, mode depth, roster and customization, presentation, and how much each game offers for replay today. The main SmackDown entries aim for a wrestling simulation feel; spin-offs such as WWE Crush Hour and WWE All Stars take a deliberate arcade approach, so their positions reflect their own goals rather than how closely they imitate the core series. Historical importance matters, but it does not automatically outweigh how enjoyable a game is to return to.

The documented central lineage includes WWF SmackDown! Just Bring It, WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth, WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain, and WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw. GameFAQs identifies Just Bring It as a PS2 release, while WWE and developer Yuke’s histories corroborate key entries in the series. The available catalog evidence does not establish every worldwide PS2 release, so this list should be read as a ranking of the covered, named games—not a guarantee of an exhaustive regional catalog.

The ranking

1. WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain (2003)

The best all-around choice in this ranking. Here Comes the Pain gives matches a more consequential feel through its body-part damage system: WWE’s retrospective notes that players had to target specific areas to inflict maximum injury. That mechanic helps distinguish it from a simple button-mashing brawler, while its roster also brought legends including Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka and Sgt. Slaughter into the game. It is the strongest blend here of wrestling strategy, star appeal and reasons to play another match.

#1 Best Overall
Sony PlayStation 2 Console - Black (Renewed)
  • The Playstation 2 system lets you play original PS1 games as well as the huge selection of PS2 games
  • Includes: Playstation 2 System, 1 Dual Shock 2 Controller, AC Cable, AV Cable
  • Color: Black
  • PlayStation2 is equipped with a 128-bit Emotion Engine processor that enables lightning-fast gameplay and impressive graphics power

Its place at the top is a judgment about the overall package, not a claim that every later game is inferior in every feature. Players who prize newer-era presentation or a different style may prefer another entry.

2. WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth (2002)

Shut Your Mouth is the pivotal bridge in the series. WWE describes it as bringing SmackDown and Raw together, and its retrospective says the game moved away from over-the-top arcade-style fighting toward slower, more realistic and strategic action. That shift gives it a distinct identity and makes it an important step toward the direction associated with the later PS2 entries.

Rank #2
PlayStation 2 Slim Console PS2 (Renewed)
  • DualShock Controller
  • DVD playback
  • Digital surround sound
  • 2 memory card slots

It ranks just below Here Comes the Pain because the latter’s specific damage system and roster details make a stronger case as a complete package. For players interested in the series’ evolution, however, Shut Your Mouth is essential rather than a mere predecessor.

3. WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw (2004)

The first SmackDown! vs. Raw is notable for expanding presentation and competition. WWE’s history account says it added Superstar voiceovers to Career mode and permitted online singles competition. Those are historical features of the release; they do not establish that an online service remains available today.

Rank #3
PlayStation 2 Console (Slim Line Version 1) (Renewed)
  • Power Cords & adapters included
  • DualShock Controller
  • DVD playback
  • Digital surround sound

Its place in the ranking reflects that forward-looking presentation, balanced against the stronger overall distinction and replay case of the two games above it. It also marks the series branding transition that would shape the next phase of wrestling games on PS2.

4. WWF SmackDown! Just Bring It

Just Bring It earns its spot as an early PS2 entry in the SmackDown lineage, and its WWF branding makes it part of the picture when “WWE games” is used to mean the licensed wrestling releases associated with the company across its name change. Its historical value is clearer than a case for placing it above the later, more fully developed entries; it is most appealing to players who want to follow the series from its early PS2 years.

Rank #4
Sony PS2 SLIM Game System Gaming Console with 2 WIRELESS CONTROLLERS PLAYSTATION-2 (Renewed)
  • PS2 SLIM Console in Black
  • Power Adapter
  • A/V Composite Cables for connecting to your TV
  • 2 New Wireless Aftermarket Controllers
  • 2 New Controller Receiver Dongles

5. WWE All Stars

WWE All Stars belongs in a broad ranking of WWE-branded PS2 releases, but it plays to a different objective from the simulation-oriented SmackDown games. Its arcade-leaning style is the reason to choose it, not a detour from realism. It suits players who want exaggerated action and a change of pace more than a continuation of the main series’ slower, strategic direction.

6. WWE Crush Hour

WWE Crush Hour is the most conspicuous departure from conventional wrestling in this group: an arcade-style spin-off rather than a SmackDown-style wrestling simulation. That difference makes it historically interesting, but it is a harder recommendation for someone seeking the best traditional WWE match experience on PS2. It is better approached as a curiosity for fans of unusual licensed spin-offs.

Which PS2 WWE game should you play first?

  • Best overall: Here Comes the Pain, for its tactical damage system, notable legends and balanced appeal.
  • Best for series history: Shut Your Mouth, which WWE identifies as the point where Raw and SmackDown came together and the gameplay shifted toward a more strategic feel.
  • Best for presentation-era features: SmackDown! vs. Raw, whose Career voiceovers and online singles play are documented as features of the 2004 release.
  • Best for a deliberately different style: All Stars or Crush Hour, if arcade action is the appeal rather than a simulation-oriented wrestling game.

Sources for the series history
