“Eulogy,” from Black Mirror Season 7, turns a fictional memory technology into a story about grief, regret and the ways we edit the past. Paul Giamatti plays Phillip, who is asked to contribute to a memorial for Carol, his former girlfriend. As he revisits photographs with help from a guide played by Patsy Ferran, his account of their relationship begins to change. Calling it one of the series’ best is a matter of taste, not a measurable consensus—but its emotional impact gives that judgment a strong case.
Spoiler warning: The sections below discuss Phillip’s discoveries and the ending.
How Eulogy’s memory technology works
In “Eulogy,” a memorial service prompts Phillip to revisit photographs of Carol through a fictional system called Eulogy. Users enter photographs, and the Guide helps Phillip navigate the memories associated with them. The technology gives the episode a visual structure: each image is both an artifact from the past and an invitation to reconsider what Phillip thinks happened.
The premise is not simply that technology can replay memories. The images are incomplete, and Phillip’s interpretation is more incomplete still. The episode’s central tension comes from the gap between what he remembers and what the photographs, the Guide and his own recollections gradually reveal.

Spoilers: Phillip’s story about Carol begins to unravel
A self-protective version of the past
Phillip has damaged Carol’s face in the photographs, a striking expression of how thoroughly he has tried to erase her from view. At first, he tells a version of their relationship that protects him: Carol is cast as the person who wronged him, and his resentment becomes the organizing story of their past.
The Guide challenges how Phillip reads particular memories. As he revisits them, the account becomes harder to sustain. Further recollections complicate his blame and make room for what Carol may have been going through—something he did not allow himself to see at the time.

Creator and co-writer Charlie Brooker described the shift to Netflix Tudum this way: “That was his narrative, that she was just this terrible person who was horrible to him and did a horrible thing,” Brooker explains. “He has a new take on what she was going through that he didn’t allow himself to see [at the time]. As a consequence of that, he’s fallen in love with her again at the end, which is bittersweet because she’s gone.”
The cassette and the final photograph
In the final movement, a cassette recording of Carol playing cello helps connect the sound of her music to Phillip’s memories. He is able to see her face in a photograph again. This is not a reversal of loss: the memorial remains, and Phillip cannot recover the relationship he once had. Instead, the ending offers a more complicated memory of Carol—and a painful awareness of how his own version of their past kept him from seeing her clearly.

Why the episode’s grief feels personal
“Eulogy” makes regret more than a feeling of wishing things had gone differently. Phillip has to confront the possibility that he misunderstood someone he loved, then held on to that misunderstanding. His renewed affection arrives too late to change their shared history, which is why the episode’s tenderness does not become a simple reconciliation.
The memorial frame also gives the technology a human purpose. Phillip is not using the system to solve a mystery or restore a lost person; he is trying to contribute to a remembrance. The process helps him reach a fuller account of Carol, but it cannot settle every question or remove the fact that she is gone.

Ferran, who plays the Guide, offered a humane reading of that process: “We make mistakes, we just have to be more compassionate toward ourselves and toward others,” she said. That compassion matters because Phillip’s recognition is not only a judgment of his younger self. It is an opportunity to see both himself and Carol with less certainty and more care.

Brooker and co-writer Ella Road drew inspiration from Peter Jackson’s 2021 docuseries The Beatles: Get Back and its use of archival image and sound. Brooker also connected the episode to his own experience of giving a eulogy for his father and looking for photographs to show at the wake. Those origins help explain why the episode treats old photographs not as polished evidence but as fragile, partial traces of lives.

Brooker told Netflix Tudum: “Pre-smartphones, it’s really easy to forget that you just don’t have many images,” he says. “What it means is those photos are really evocative when you see them, because you’ve got fewer of them, but also they’re imperfect. Today, we take photos, and you can adjust it so that nobody’s blinking, or everyone’s happy. Back then, half my photos were overexposed.” The episode builds on that imperfection: a photograph can preserve a moment without explaining it, and the person looking back can supply a story that the image itself does not confirm.
Why “best” is a judgment, not a consensus
There is a persuasive case for “Eulogy” as one of Black Mirror’s strongest episodes: its technology serves the character drama, its images and sound are tied to the work of remembering, and its ending gives Phillip a changed understanding without pretending that understanding can undo loss. The episode’s force depends less on a technological twist than on the human cost of a story held too tightly.
That emphasis will not work equally well for every viewer. TIME ranked “Eulogy” fifth among Season 7’s six episodes. Its review praised Giamatti and Ferran’s performances and the emotional premise, while arguing that sentimentality and regret limit the episode’s momentum. That is a useful counterpoint: the episode prioritizes emotional reconsideration over a fast-moving plot, and viewers who want the series’ ideas to produce sharper propulsion may find it too soft or slow.
Giamatti also described the technology as both helpful and somewhat coercive. “There’s something beautiful about how AI is easing somebody’s grief and easing somebody’s sense of loss,” Giamatti told Netflix. “I do feel like the character’s coerced somewhat by it, but ultimately, it’s a good thing. I hope that this episode is touching to audiences […], that it causes people to reflect a bit about themselves and their lives and about the possibly positive function of AI in their lives.” That tension suits the story: the system guides Phillip toward a different understanding, but the emotional work belongs to him.
