There is no single Godzilla biography that runs unbroken from 1954 to 2023. The films repeatedly reboot or reinterpret the monster, and Hollywood’s Godzilla belongs to a separate crossover continuity. The clearest way to understand every major screen version is as a guided tour through the Japanese film eras, stand-alone reinventions, and American branches—not as one continuous story. This guide covers films through Godzilla Minus One (2023); it does not include the 2024 MonsterVerse film.

How many different Godzillas are there?

There is no definitive count, because “version” can mean a film continuity, a distinct interpretation, or an individual design. For a useful overview, think in terms of major cinematic incarnations: the original and its Showa-era successors, the more connected 1984–1995 series, the mostly separate Millennium films, the 1998 American interpretation, the Hollywood MonsterVerse, and the stand-alone Japanese reinventions of 2016, 2017–2018, and 2023.

Release eras are a guide to when films appeared, not a map of one shared fictional timeline. In particular, the 1954 original is a thematic starting point, but the later films do not all continue its story.

Godzilla movies in order: the major film branches

Branch or incarnation Release span covered here How its continuity works
Original / Showa run 1954–1975 Begins with the original Japanese film; tone shifts over the run.
Return and Heisei continuity 1984–1995 A restarted Japanese series with a more connected story line.
Millennium films 1999–2004 Mostly separate story premises; two films form a linked pair.
American GODZILLA 1998 A separate US studio interpretation.
Hollywood MonsterVerse 2014 onward; through 2023 in this guide A Hollywood crossover branch involving Godzilla and Kong.
Shin Godzilla 2016 A stand-alone Japanese reinvention.
Animated trilogy 2017–2018 A separate animated science-fiction incarnation.
Godzilla Minus One 2023 A stand-alone Japanese film set before the 1954 original.

The original and Showa-era Godzilla (1954–1975)

Godzilla (1954): the nuclear-era origin

Released in Japan on November 3, 1954, the original film gives Godzilla a meaning later versions can reshape but cannot erase. The monster is tied to radiation and nuclear testing, and the film’s horror and tragedy grow from that context. Its Godzilla is not simply a creature to defeat; the character embodies the destructive consequences of human weapons and testing.

  • 6” tall action figures featuring Godzilla characters from their respective films
  • These figures are highly detailed with a true likeness to the character with a wide range of articulation

The original’s effects used a performer in a suit and miniatures. That approach became part of the character’s screen history, though later films would reinterpret both the image and the role of Godzilla.

The Showa run: catastrophe gives way to monster adventure

Toho’s first major film run continues through Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975). Across those years, the series changes in tone: the early horror is not the mood of every later entry, and the run moves toward more overt monster adventure. It is more useful to see the Showa films as an evolving period than to treat them as a single unchanging portrayal.

The 1984 restart and Heisei continuity (1984–1995)

The Return of Godzilla begins a new line

The Return of Godzilla (1984) restarts the Japanese series after the Showa period. It begins a more connected sequence that ends with Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), making this era a better fit for viewers looking for a continuing film storyline than the largely separate Millennium films.

Why the 1984 film is called Heisei

The 1984 movie came out during Japan’s Shōwa calendar period, but it is conventionally grouped with the later Heisei series. The calendar name and the film-era label are not identical: one refers to Japan’s imperial era, while the other is a film-history shorthand.

The Millennium films (1999–2004)

Mostly separate takes, not one continuous timeline

Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999) begins a set of later films that mostly revisit Godzilla through separate story premises. The Millennium label therefore describes a release period, not a single unified continuity carried through every entry.

A linked pair: Mechagodzilla and Tokyo S.O.S.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003) are connected to each other. They are the notable linked pair within a period otherwise best understood as a series of distinct takes.

American Godzilla: two different branches

GODZILLA (1998): a separate US interpretation

The 1998 American GODZILLA is its own studio interpretation, not a chapter in Toho’s Japanese film continuities or the later MonsterVerse. Treating it separately avoids implying that all screen versions share one origin or story.

The MonsterVerse: Godzilla in a Kong crossover world

The Hollywood MonsterVerse begins with Godzilla (2014) and also includes Kong: Skull Island (2017), establishing a crossover setting involving both characters. Its Godzilla line continues through Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and, after the period covered by this guide, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). This is a distinct Hollywood branch, not an extension of the Japanese standalone films.

Shin Godzilla (2016): a stand-alone reinvention

Toho released Shin Godzilla in Japan on July 29, 2016. It stands apart from the older continuities and presents a radically transforming monster amid institutional crisis. Rather than treating it as the next installment in a shared biography, read it as a new answer to what a Godzilla film can be.

The animated Godzilla trilogy (2017–2018)

Three films in a distinct science-fiction setting

The animated incarnation appears in Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (2017), Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle (2018), and Godzilla: The Planet Eater (2018). Together they form an animated science-fiction trilogy with a distinct Godzilla, rather than a continuation of the live-action Japanese or Hollywood film branches.

Godzilla Minus One (2023): a postwar story before the original

Its place in the timeline

Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One is set in postwar Japan, before the events of the 1954 original. It was released in Japan on November 3, 2023, and the official Japanese Godzilla site identifies it as the 30th Japanese-produced Godzilla film. That milestone counts Japanese productions; it does not make the film a sequel to every earlier Japanese incarnation.

A new effects approach, with the original’s concerns in view

The Associated Press describes the film’s Godzilla as computer-generated, contrasting with the original’s suit performance and miniatures. Yamazaki said, “I love the original Godzilla, and I felt I should stay true to that spirit, addressing the issues of war and nuclear weapons.” He also described Godzilla as “half-monster, but it’s also half-god.” Those comments place the film in conversation with the original’s concerns while leaving it its own story.

What changes from one Godzilla to another?

  • Continuity: Some films form a connected sequence; others restart the character or stand alone.
  • Role and origin: Godzilla can carry the original’s radiation and nuclear-testing associations, or serve a different story premise in a new continuity.
  • Effects and image: The original used suit performance and miniatures; Minus One uses computer-generated imagery, according to the Associated Press. Those examples show a change in method, not a complete inventory of every film’s production techniques.
  • Tone: The series ranges from catastrophe and horror toward monster adventure and crossover spectacle. No single tone defines every era or film.
  • Historical context: The 1954 film’s nuclear-era roots remain a key reference point, while later films reinterpret the character for their own stories and settings.

The best starting point depends on what you want: the 1954 film for the character’s historical and thematic foundation; the 1984–1995 line for a more connected Japanese run; or one of the stand-alone films if you want a self-contained reinterpretation.
