Top Gun’s aircraft rank differently depending on whether you judge them by screen presence, real-world role, or documented capability. For an overall ranking, the F-14 Tomcat takes first place: it is the film’s defining U.S. fighter and was designed for carrier fleet defense. The other aircraft in this list serve different purposes—most notably, the “MiG-28” is fictional and is portrayed by real F-5s.
How this ranking works
This list weighs three things: each aircraft’s importance to the original film’s identity, its role in the story or TOPGUN training setting, and the capability details documented by the cited sources. Those measures do not make the aircraft directly comparable. The available sources do not establish matched performance figures for the film-specific F-5s and A-4s, so the order between them is an editorial choice based on their roles—not a claim that one would win a real-world matchup.
3. A-4 Skyhawk: the training-setting aircraft
The A-4 Skyhawk belongs in a list of aircraft featured in Top Gun because it is associated with the school’s training environment. The film FAQ identifies the instructors’ aircraft as A-4E Skyhawks, while the Department of Defense includes the Skyhawk in its overview of TOPGUN aircraft. These references establish its connection to the film and training context, not a technical comparison with the F-14 or F-5.
The Skyhawk also had a notable Navy and demonstration-team history: the National Naval Aviation Museum says the Blue Angels flew the A-4 from 1974 to 1986 and that the Navy retired its last Skyhawk in 2003. Those dates provide context for the aircraft’s service, but do not determine its place in a fighter-versus-fighter ranking.

- With folding wings!
- Squadron n. 84 which deployed this Tomcat was in Vietnam and in the Gulf.
- The F-14 has been an iconic military vehicle, also starring in the Top Gun movie starring Tom Cruise.
2. F-5 Tiger II: the aircraft behind the fictional MiG-28
The “MiG-28” is not a real aircraft designation. The film FAQ identifies American F-5 aircraft as the screen stand-in for the fictional adversary. That makes the F-5 essential to the movie’s aerial conflict, but it should not be mistaken for a Soviet MiG.
The F-5’s place here reflects its adversary role and visual contrast with the Tomcat, not evidence that it would lose every actual matchup. The Department of Defense describes the Navy’s use of F-5N aircraft as adversaries in pilot training; that current training context is distinct from identifying the specific aircraft used in the 1986 film. The sources cited here do not provide comparable performance figures for the film’s F-5 variants and the F-14.

1. F-14 Tomcat: best overall for the film and its carrier-fighter role
The F-14 is the unmistakable centerpiece of the original film’s U.S. fighter story, and it has the strongest case for first place when screen identity and documented mission are considered together. The USS Midway Museum describes the Tomcat as a first line of defense for carrier battlegroups for more than 30 years and notes its fame through Top Gun. Its variable-sweep wings—often called swing wings—suited the aircraft to both high-speed flight and carrier landings.
The USS Midway Museum’s general F-14 specifications list two crew members, a 20 mm cannon, guided missiles, a service ceiling above 50,000 feet, and a combat radius of 500 nautical miles. It gives a maximum speed of Mach 2.34 at high altitude. These are the museum’s stated specifications for the Tomcat, not figures verified here for the exact F-14 variant used in filming; the page lists GE F110-GE-400 engines, so the figures should not be applied indiscriminately to every Tomcat variant.

- Realistic model of the legendary F-14A TOMCAT fighter – build a model of one of the US Navy's most recognizable aircraft, also known from the iconic movie TOP GUN.
- Movable parts for added realism – the model features variable-sweep wings, retractable landing gear with rotating wheels and detailed under-wing weaponry.
- Official TOP GUN and NORTHROP GRUMMAN license – the set faithfully reproduces the movie version of the F-14A TOMCAT flown by Pete "Maverick" Mitchell and "Goose".
- Collectible 1:48 scale – the finished model measures 38.5 × 27 × 10.5 cm; it looks great on its display stand and fits perfectly into a COBI aviation model collection.
- Ideal model for aviation and TOP GUN fans aged 8 and up – the set is designed for military aircraft enthusiasts, collectors, military history buffs and fans of brick-based modeling.
The F-14’s position is therefore not a claim that it is superior to every aircraft in every condition. It ranks first because it is the film’s defining fighter and the aircraft in this group with the clearest documented connection to the carrier-defense mission.
