Vhagar is the biggest dragon in the Dance-era story, with Vermithor the next major size benchmark. After those two, a full ranking is necessarily approximate: HBO publishes a roster of named dragons, but no consistent measurement chart for their lengths, heights, weights or wingspans. The list below compares the dragons shown in the television adaptation by apparent body mass, silhouette, stated relative size and growth stage—not invented dimensions.
Which dragon is the biggest in House of the Dragon?
HBO’s Dragon Index identifies the series’ named dragons but does not rank them by measurements. For the Dance-era comparison, Vhagar is the secure first-place choice: the franchise guide describes her as the largest living dragon, and an editorial comparison identifies her as the largest dragon active during the Dance. Vermithor is the next major giant, described as one of the very largest and, in that guide’s timeframe, the second-largest living dragon. Neither source establishes an exact size gap.
Every on-screen dragon, ranked approximately by size
This is a comparison of dragons depicted on screen, not a claim that the show has supplied a single official scale. The broad tiers are more dependable than the exact order within them. Screen designs, relative descriptions and each dragon’s growth stage inform the placement; length and bulk do not always produce the same impression.
- Vhagar — The clearest largest-dragon anchor in the Dance-era comparison.
- Vermithor — The other firmly established giant, placed immediately below Vhagar without assigning a numerical difference.
- Caraxes — A mature dragon with a long, distinctive silhouette. His apparent length can make him seem larger than a bulk-based comparison would suggest.
- Meleys — A mature dragon in the upper adult tier. Her placement relative to other adult dragons is approximate, not a measured result.
- Dreamfyre — A mature dragon whose exact position among the adult designs is not established by a consistent measurement source.
- Syrax — An adult dragon, but not one of the top two size anchors. Her placement among the other mature dragons remains a visual comparison.
- Seasmoke — A grown dragon below the largest tier in this approximate screen ranking.
- Sunfyre — A younger adult dragon, placed below the mature giants; the sources do not establish a precise comparison with every other dragon in this tier.
- Vermax — A young dragon whose size reflects his growth stage, so his ranking may shift as the adaptation advances.
- Arrax — A young dragon, grouped toward the smaller end rather than assigned an unsupported exact rank against other juveniles.
- Tyraxes — A young dragon in the smaller tier; the available roster does not provide a measured comparison with the other young dragons.
- Moondancer — Her screen portrayal is much larger than her book description suggests, but she remains in the younger, smaller part of this screen-based ranking.
The exact order from Caraxes downward is less certain than the top two. A slender dragon can look longer while a heavier-bodied one appears bulkier, and the reviewed sources do not provide a universal scale to settle every close placement. A season 2-era editorial ranking offers one interpretation, while later episodes and growth can change the roster and comparisons; a current roster guide is useful for status, not as a size chart.

Why a dragon’s age does not determine its size
Age matters, but it is not a reliable size chart on its own. Lore accounts describe food and freedom to fly as factors in growth, while confinement can restrict it. That means two dragons of similar age need not reach the same size, and the oldest dragon is not automatically the largest.
How the books and television show differ
Fire & Blood and the television designs do not always present dragons at the same scale. Moondancer is described in book lore as tiny—no larger than a horse—while her television version is substantially larger. Treat book descriptions as book-specific, rather than using them to override the screen ranking. Fire & Blood is the source novel for readers who want the book account, with the understanding that the adaptation’s dragon designs may differ.

What can—and cannot—be measured
No consistent published set of exact dimensions for every dragon was established in the sources reviewed. HBO’s index is a named-dragon roster, not an all-dragon measurement chart. The full list is therefore an editorial comparison of television designs, informed by relative descriptions; fan-chart figures should not be presented as verified lengths, heights, weights or wingspans.
