The ten most recent Best Picture winners, ranked from strongest to weakest, are the films honored at the 2017–2026 Academy Awards ceremonies. The ceremony year is used throughout; those ceremonies honored films released from 2016 through 2025. The Academy’s 2026 ceremony page confirms that year’s award honored films released in 2025, and its official database records results through the 98th Academy Awards, presented in 2026.
This is an editorial ranking, not an Academy judgment of which winner is best. Each film is considered on narrative control and originality, performances, direction and craft, emotional or intellectual force, and rewatch value.
1. Parasite (2020 ceremony; 2019 release)
Bong Joon Ho’s film has the sharpest command of tone in this group. It moves from comedy to suspense to tragedy without making those shifts feel like separate exercises, and its class conflict is embedded in the characters’ choices, the house’s layout, and the story’s escalating reversals. The ensemble is precise, but the film’s greatest strength is how every performance and visual detail serves the same tightening design.
Its social argument remains potent without reducing the characters to symbols, and the carefully planted details reward a second viewing. The counterargument is that its final movement can feel deliberately brutal and tightly engineered; viewers who prefer emotional openness over controlled shocks may find it less inviting to revisit.

2. Moonlight (2017 ceremony; 2016 release)
Barry Jenkins builds a coming-of-age story from three distinct chapters, letting changes in actors, posture, silence, and setting carry the passage of time. The form is unusually economical: a glance or a pause often does more than explanatory dialogue could. Its intimate scale gives the film a lasting emotional force, while its visual and musical choices make the experience feel expansive rather than small.
The structure asks the viewer to accept gaps between chapters instead of providing a continuous account of Chiron’s life. That restraint is central to its power, though it can leave viewers wanting more connective tissue or a longer stay with its characters.
3. Everything Everywhere All at Once (2023 ceremony; 2022 release)
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert turn a multiverse premise into a family drama about attention, regret, and the effort to remain kind when life feels overwhelming. Its maximalist editing, genre shifts, and practical-looking visual inventions could easily become noise; instead, the film repeatedly returns to the strained bond between Evelyn and Joy. Michelle Yeoh’s performance anchors the chaos with a convincing progression from exhaustion to hard-won tenderness.
The film’s generosity is its defining strength, but its relentless pace and barrage of jokes, references, and images are also its clearest weakness. Some viewers will find its emotional resolution moving; others may feel the film has pushed every idea and stylistic device past the point of saturation.

4. Oppenheimer (2024 ceremony; 2023 release)
Christopher Nolan makes a sprawling account of scientific ambition and political consequence feel driven by one man’s point of view. The cross-cut structure turns the creation of the atomic bomb into both a technical and moral story, while the later security proceedings show how power can recast a person’s legacy. Cillian Murphy’s contained performance gives the film a center even when its large cast and competing timelines threaten to pull attention in several directions.
The craft is forceful, especially in the way sound, editing, and image create pressure without relying on a conventional action structure. Its scale and density can make it feel more intellectually commanding than emotionally intimate, and the rapid movement through historical events may leave some viewers wanting greater context beyond Oppenheimer’s perspective.
5. One Battle After Another (2026 ceremony; 2025 release)
The Academy’s 2026 ceremony page names One Battle After Another Best Picture, making it the newest film in this ranking. Its placement here reflects the value of a winner that makes contemporary conflict feel immediate while keeping character and consequence in view. For a list spanning radically different styles, its inclusion also makes clear that a recent award result is not, by itself, evidence of long-term staying power.
As the most recent winner, it has had less time to demonstrate how it holds up across repeat viewings than the older films on this list. That is a limitation of any present-day ranking, not a verdict on its eventual reputation.

6. The Shape of Water (2018 ceremony; 2017 release)
Guillermo del Toro gives this romantic fantasy a tactile world of labor, secrecy, and mid-century institutional power. Its central relationship is expressed through gesture and atmosphere rather than conventional dialogue, and the production design makes the setting feel both storybook and oppressive. The film’s commitment to sincerity is a strength: it treats its unlikely romance as emotionally real rather than as a joke.
That same fairy-tale directness can make its villains and moral divisions feel less complex than the film’s visual world. Viewers who respond to its lush romanticism may find it deeply rewatchable; those who want more ambiguity in the conflict may find its sentimentality too emphatic.
7. Anora (2025 ceremony; 2024 release)
Sean Baker’s film draws momentum from the collision between Ani’s self-determination and the wealthy family that assumes it can control the consequences of her choices. Its shifts in tone let comedy, panic, and vulnerability coexist, while the central performance gives the escalating conflict a human scale. The film is most compelling when it observes how people behave under pressure rather than explaining what the viewer should think about them.
Its extended, chaotic stretches are part of the experience, but they can also test patience; not every viewer will find the abrupt changes in energy or its final turn equally satisfying. The Academy’s 2025 ceremony page identifies it as the Best Picture winner for that ceremony, honoring films released in 2024.

8. CODA (2022 ceremony; 2021 release)
Siân Heder’s family drama is built around a clear conflict: Ruby wants to pursue music, while her family relies on her as a bridge to a hearing world they cannot access in the same way. The cast gives the family’s humor and friction a lived-in quality, and the film makes its emotional stakes easy to follow without requiring elaborate plotting. Its directness is a real virtue for a story about a young person trying to separate love from obligation.
The trade-off is familiarity. The coming-of-age and audition-story beats are recognizable, and the film’s emotional turns can feel more conventionally arranged than those of the higher-ranked winners. Its warmth and clarity will matter more to some viewers than formal surprise.

Peter Farrelly’s road movie has an accessible two-hander at its center: the changing relationship between pianist Don Shirley and driver Tony Vallelonga. The performances create an easy rhythm, and the episodic structure makes the film straightforward to follow. That approach helps explain its broad narrative appeal, but accessibility is not the same as depth.
The film’s treatment of racism and Shirley’s life has drawn criticism for filtering much of the story through Tony’s point of view and for smoothing difficult material into a conciliatory friendship arc. That framing limits its complexity and is the main reason it ranks below winners with more formally distinctive or challenging approaches.

10. Nomadland (2021 ceremony; 2020 release)
Chloé Zhao’s film favors observation over plot, following Fern through temporary work and a community of people living on the road. Frances McDormand’s restrained performance gives continuity to a film that often pauses to watch landscapes, labor, and conversation unfold. Its quiet attention to solitude and makeshift community is unusually consistent, and its mode of storytelling is the most distinct among the ten winners here.
That slowness is also its most significant barrier. The episodic form and deliberately low-key emotional register may feel absorbing to viewers who value contemplation, but remote to those who want stronger dramatic escalation or more sustained interaction with its central character.
How to read this ranking
The Academy Award determines which ten films belong on the list; it does not supply a quality order. The order above weighs storytelling, performances, direction and craft, impact, and rewatch value together. A different viewer might reasonably rank a quieter film above a more formally audacious one, or favor warmth and accessibility over ambiguity. In particular, the newest winner has had less time to prove its staying power than films released years earlier.
The ceremony years are 2017 through 2026, not the films’ release years. The Academy’s official database describes itself as the record of nominees and winners and states that it is complete through the 98th Academy Awards, presented in 2026. The ceremony pages for 2017, 2024, and 2025 provide additional confirmation for those years.
