The worldwide attention that followed her casting in Lost was overwhelming, she said, and she has since stepped away from acting—though she has not ruled out returning for an unusually exciting project.
Why Lilly called fame the price of being an artist
In an exclusive conversation with The Sunday Times reported by PerthNow, Lilly described celebrity as an unwanted consequence of the career she chose, not a goal in itself.
“I’ve never been somebody who’s looking to be a celebrity. In fact, I always felt that was the cost, the price, I had to pay to be able to be an artist for a living,” she said.
Her comments were specific to her own experience. She was not making a general claim about what fame means for every performer.

How Lost changed the scale of attention
Lilly said the attention that came after she was cast in Lost was unlike anything she had been prepared for.
“It was really overwhelming,” she said.
“There was nowhere to hide, it was just fan attention all over the world, and I wasn’t prepared for it, and I don’t think I dealt with it very well, to be honest.”

Would Evangeline Lilly act again?
Lilly left open the possibility of returning if the right project came along. The threshold, she said, would be high: “It’s possible that something else will call me out of retirement again, but it would have to be really, really exciting, because I’m ready for other things,” she said with a smile.
