Anniversary is most compelling when it turns political upheaval into a family problem: Ellen and Paul Taylor’s home is unsettled when Ellen’s former student Liz starts dating their son Josh and becomes part of their close-knit circle. The film’s domestic tensions give its political premise an intimate entry point, though the political world-building has drawn criticism for being too vague to give the allegory full force.
What is Anniversary about?
In Jan Komasa’s thriller, the Taylors’ family life collides with a rising movement called “The Change.” Liz’s return to Ellen’s life—and her relationship with Josh—brings new loyalties and tensions into the household as the country faces uncertainty. The setup makes the family more than a backdrop: the film uses its fractures to reflect a broader political crisis.
The central question is whether the intimate story can carry that larger idea. Rotten Tomatoes’ review listing includes praise for the political allegory and Diane Lane’s dramatic weight, alongside criticism that vague world-building weakens the message. That split points to the film’s central trade-off: its family premise is readily legible, while the movement’s broader rise may feel less fully explained.
How well do the family drama and political thriller fit together?
The strongest organizing idea is the collision between a family’s private loyalties and the demands of a movement reshaping public life. Liz’s relationship with Josh gives that conflict a personal route into the Taylor home, while Ellen’s former connection to Liz adds another layer to the disruption. This is a useful foundation for a thriller about political anxiety because the stakes arrive through relationships rather than abstract debate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The risk is that an allegory can gesture toward a national crisis without making its mechanics clear. One review excerpt surfaced by Rotten Tomatoes praises the allegory but argues that vague world-building blunts its message. That criticism matters because viewers need enough context to understand how “The Change” gains influence and what it means for ordinary people; without it, the family drama may feel more concrete than the political threat surrounding it.
How are the performances and filmmaking credited?
Jan Komasa directs. Lori Rosene-Gambino wrote the screenplay, with the story credited to Komasa and Rosene-Gambino. Diane Lane plays Ellen, Kyle Chandler plays Paul, Phoebe Dynevor plays Liz, and Dylan O’Brien plays Josh. Zoey Deutch, Mckenna Grace, Madeline Brewer, and Daryl McCormack are also among the ensemble cast.

Lane’s performance is singled out in one of the review excerpts included on Rotten Tomatoes, which describes her dramatic weight as a strength. The available listing does not provide the same specific assessment for every cast member, so it is more useful to treat the ensemble in relation to the film’s premise: the drama depends on the family’s changing ties as political uncertainty presses in.
What are critics and audiences saying?
Rotten Tomatoes’ listing, retrieved in 2026, showed a 68% Tomatometer from 73 critic reviews and a 78% Popcornmeter from more than 50 verified audience ratings. These are changeable aggregator snapshots, not fixed measures of quality. The excerpts shown there reflect a divided response, particularly around the political allegory and the clarity of the world-building.
