Another Simple Favor is most rewarding as a glossy, campy reunion between Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively—not as a tightly constructed mystery. The sequel moves Stephanie Smothers and Emily Nelson to Capri for an extravagant wedding, bringing back their sharp chemistry, striking fashion and taste for trouble. But its twists and crowded plot do not build into a whodunit as focused as the original.
What is Another Simple Favor about?
In this sequel to 2018’s A Simple Favor, Stephanie and Emily meet again on the Italian island of Capri, where Emily is preparing to marry a wealthy Italian businessman. Murder and betrayal hang over the wedding-weekend setup; the premise is best left there if you want to avoid spoilers. Amazon’s film page identifies it as a follow-up to the original movie.
Paul Feig returns to direct, with Kendrick and Lively reprising their roles. Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells and Bashir Salahuddin also return. New cast members include Allison Janney, Alex Newell, Aparna Nancherla, Kelly McCormack, Michele Morrone and Elizabeth Perkins. Jessica Sharzer and Laeta Kalogridis co-wrote the screenplay. The original film was based on Darcey Bell’s novel; the sequel’s premise is a new story, not a direct adaptation of that book.
Does the style make up for the story?
Capri, costumes and camp are the main attractions
The film knows that its wedding setting is a showcase. Capri provides a glamorous backdrop, the wardrobe makes an impression, and the heightened tone gives the story room for knowingly extravagant silliness. The Guardian highlights the scenery, costumes and camp, while TheWrap also praises the fashion. If you enjoy a mystery that treats glamour as part of the entertainment rather than mere decoration, the sequel has plenty to offer.

Kendrick and Lively still have the right rhythm
The central pleasure remains the uneasy connection between Stephanie and Emily. Kendrick’s alert, often flustered energy plays well against Lively’s polished, hard-to-read presence. Their banter carries scenes that might otherwise be weighed down by the film’s plotting. Both The Guardian and TheWrap identify the leads’ chemistry as a strength.
The whodunit loses focus
The mystery piles on turns without giving each one enough weight to deepen the suspense. The Guardian points to dropped threads and a plot that becomes increasingly ungrounded; TheWrap finds the whodunit less compelling than the original’s and says the ensemble sometimes distracts from the central pair. The roughly two-hour runtime can feel bogged down as the story expands rather than tightens.

That imbalance is the sequel’s defining trade-off: its look and performances are more consistent pleasures than the mechanics of its mystery. The first film’s blend of dark comedy and thriller had a sharper sense of shape; this follow-up leans harder into camp, but the extra excess does not always produce better storytelling.
Is Another Simple Favor worth watching?
Watch it for the lead pairing, fashion, Capri atmosphere and deliberately over-the-top tone. Go in expecting a messier, less gripping mystery than the original, not a cleaner continuation of its plotting. Rotten Tomatoes’ snapshot accessed on October 7, 2026, showed a 59% Tomatometer from 151 critic reviews and a 35% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 ratings; both figures can change and are platform scores, not a substitute for an individual review.
