Spoilers for the ending of Eternity. Joan ultimately chooses Larry, the husband with whom she shared a lifetime, after briefly trying the afterlife she might have had with Luke, her first love. She returns to the Junction and leaves with Larry for an abandoned, simple eternity. Director David Freyne has said he imagines them happy there, though the film leaves the details of their future open.
What happens at the end of Eternity?
In David Freyne’s 2025 film, souls arrive at the Junction and have one week to choose where to spend eternity. Joan faces a choice between Larry, her husband of many years, and Luke, the first love who died young and waited for her. A24’s official synopsis sets up that dilemma.

Joan initially resists being forced to choose. She visits both men’s afterlives, then boards for Luke’s Mountain World. Larry notices a clue in her appearance that recalls when she was happiest earlier in life. Rather than try to hold on to her, he lets her go. Joan eventually returns to the Junction, finds Larry, and chooses him. The two escape together into an abandoned afterlife.
Why does Joan try Luke’s world before returning to Larry?
Luke represents the life that was interrupted
Luke and Joan had a brief marriage before his early death. In Mountain World, the Junction’s archive reenacts moments from that time. The memories affirm their love and the grief of losing it, but they cannot tell Joan what a full life together would have been like. Luke represents a powerful possibility: the future she never got to experience.

Larry represents the life they actually shared
Larry’s Beach World is sunny and familiar, shaped by the couple’s ordinary routines. Joan recalls their first date and long marriage: a real history with imperfections as well as intimacy. She did not get that kind of life with Luke. Trying Luke’s world gives her a way to distinguish the remembered promise of an interrupted romance from the relationship that formed the person she is now.
Freyne described the central conflict to TIME as “the dilemma of choosing between your first great love and your last great love.” The contrast is not simply between a better and worse partner. It is between an imagined life and a lived one, and between who Joan was before Luke died and who she became with Larry.

Does the ending say Joan made the right choice?
No universal verdict is built into the ending. Joan’s decision can be read as an act of self-knowledge: she explores the possibility of a life with Luke and then chooses the love that fits the person she is now. But that is an interpretation of her decision, not a rule that long marriages matter more than first love.
In A24’s production notes, Freyne says, “For me, it was vital that for Joan, however daunting the choice, there truly is no right or wrong. There is no good guy or bad guy.” Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Joan, describes the dilemma as a choice about love beyond “the normal framing of earthly time and circumstances.” The film invites viewers to weigh the relationships differently rather than treating Joan’s answer as the only possible one.

What happens to Joan and Larry after they escape?
The film does not explain exactly how their abandoned eternity works or whether they will have to keep evading the Junction’s authorities. Freyne offered his own happy reading of the final image in a CinemaBlend interview published February 13, 2026: “But they went to this, used, kind of simple afterlife. And I think they’re quite happy. I think they’re good. Yeah.” He also described them as fugitives on the run, while saying he thinks they settle into that simple afterlife. That is the director’s interpretation, not a further scene shown in the movie.

Eternity stars Elizabeth Olsen as Joan, Miles Teller as Larry, and Callum Turner as Luke, and was directed by David Freyne. Apple’s US listing describes it as a 2025 romantic comedy with a 1-hour-54-minute runtime and a PG-13 rating. Apple TV Press lists February 13, 2026, as its release date on that service.
