Emily ends season 4 with no confirmed partner. She and Gabriel are apart, though he sets off toward Rome to pursue her; she is spending time with Marcello, a new romantic possibility. The finale shows neither a reunion with Gabriel nor a lasting commitment to Marcello, leaving Emily’s romantic future unresolved.
What happens to Emily and Gabriel?
Emily and Gabriel acknowledge their love, but the fallout from Camille’s supposed pregnancy and continuing miscommunication leave them separated. Gabriel earns a Michelin star and decides he wants to pursue Emily. The finale suggests he is heading to Rome, but it does not show him arriving or speaking with her. Netflix’s season 4 ending explainer recaps the events; the distinction matters: Gabriel’s decision to pursue Emily is shown, their reunion is not.
Does Emily choose Marcello?
No definitive choice is made. Emily meets Marcello in the Alps, reconnects with him in Rome, and spends time with him there. Their romance is new, and the finale presents it as a possibility rather than a settled endgame.
Creator Darren Star described the contrast in a TVLine interview published September 12, 2024: “First of all, we know a lot more about Gabriel than we do about Marcello. I think Marcello is somebody Emily is just getting to know and has this infatuation with at the moment. Are Emily and Alfie still together?
No. Emily and Alfie share an emotionally charged breakup kiss, then have a tender encounter at Christmas that affirms their relationship is over. They still care about each other, but Alfie is not a current partner or one of the finale’s two live romantic possibilities.
Why is Emily in Rome?
Rome brings together Emily’s work and personal life. After Agence Grateau wins Marcello’s family luxury cashmere company as a client, Sylvie appoints Emily to lead the agency’s new Rome office. Emily reconnects with Marcello there, while Gabriel’s apparent journey toward her creates the finale’s unresolved romantic tension.

The Rome role is a new office and presence, not proof that Emily has left Paris for good. Netflix’s ending recap describes Emily as having unfinished business in Paris. Star likewise told Netflix Tudum: “Emily’s going to have a presence in Rome. It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris, but she’s going to have a presence in Rome.”
Is Rome a permanent move?
The finale does not establish that Emily has permanently moved away from Paris. In his September 12, 2024 TVLine interview, Star said of the move: “There’s no Season 5 yet, so I don’t know. It’s to be determined. But I feel like there’s another office in Rome.” That answer reflects what was known when the interview was published; it leaves the permanence of her move open.

What the ending leaves unanswered
The finale puts two possibilities side by side without resolving them: Gabriel has history with Emily and is heading toward her, while Marcello is someone she is only beginning to know and is currently spending time with. It does not show Emily choosing between them, Gabriel reaching her, or either relationship becoming a lasting commitment. Its final beat is a cliffhanger about what Emily will do next, not an answer to who she ultimately ends up with.
