ESPN, ABC-owned stations and other Disney networks returned to DIRECTV after Disney and DIRECTV announced an agreement in principle on September 14, 2024. The deal ended a blackout that began on September 1 and also created a path for Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ to be offered through selected DIRECTV packages. However, the public announcement did not disclose the complete contract, wholesale rates or a universal channel lineup for every customer.
What happened between Disney and DIRECTV?
The dispute was a carriage negotiation: Disney wanted DIRECTV to continue paying for distribution of its large portfolio of sports, entertainment and news networks, while DIRECTV pushed for more flexibility in how those channels were packaged and priced.
Disney-owned programming became unavailable to DIRECTV customers on September 1, 2024. The blackout affected the opening weeks of college football and other scheduled ESPN and ABC programming. On September 14, the companies announced an agreement in principle that restored carriage of Disney’s linear networks.
The public release described broad terms rather than a fully published contract. It did not specify subscriber fees, exact channel tiers, contract length, restoration times or customer-by-customer pricing.
Which channels returned?
The agreement covered Disney’s major linear television portfolio, including:
- ESPN and ESPN2
- Other ESPN networks and applicable college-sports networks
- ABC-owned television stations
- Disney Channel-branded networks
- Freeform
- FX networks
- National Geographic channels
Disney’s blackout explanation identified ABC-owned stations, ESPN networks, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX and National Geographic among the affected services.
This does not mean that every customer received an identical lineup. Availability can still depend on whether the customer uses DIRECTV satellite or DIRECTV streaming, the package selected, local-channel rights and the customer’s ZIP code.

Why did the blackout happen?
DIRECTV argued that customers should have more choice over the channels they pay for. Its position emphasized smaller, genre-based packages and objected to the economics of requiring households to carry broad bundles that included programming they might not watch. DIRECTV’s account of the dispute is available in its packaging statement.
Disney argued that its sports, entertainment and local-broadcast portfolio retained substantial value and should be distributed on terms that reflected that value. Disney’s public statements were part of the negotiation, not an independent finding about which side was financially correct.

The disagreement also reflected a larger change in television distribution. Disney increasingly offers programming directly through streaming, while distributors such as DIRECTV want to combine traditional live channels with more selective streaming benefits. The negotiation therefore concerned more than whether ESPN would remain on the guide: it also concerned who controls packaging, pricing and access to streaming services.
What streaming services were included?
The 2024 announcement provided for Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ to be made available through selected DIRECTV packages under a wholesale arrangement. It also said the services would be available separately on an a la carte basis.
That wording is important. The deal did not mean that every DIRECTV customer automatically received all three services. Eligibility depended on the package and the offer available to the account.
Also, the original deal named ESPN+. It should not be confused with the later ESPN direct-to-consumer service and its ESPN Unlimited tier, which Disney announced for launch in 2025 in a separate announcement.
Did DIRECTV customers receive compensation?
During the dispute, DIRECTV announced a $30 bill credit. Customers should distinguish that specific 2024 announcement from DIRECTV’s broader current process for checking credits related to service disruptions.

DIRECTV’s support instructions direct eligible customers to check through TVPromise.com. The company says an approved credit can take up to two billing cycles to appear. Eligibility may vary by service, account, market and billing status, so customers should verify the offer rather than assume that every account received it automatically.

The agreement helped move pay-TV further toward a hybrid model: traditional channel bundles combined with genre-focused options and streaming subscriptions.
Current DIRECTV pages illustrate that direction, although they should not be read as an itemized list of terms from the 2024 agreement:
- MySports is aimed at sports viewers and currently highlights ESPN Unlimited alongside other sports channels.
- MyEntertainment highlights services such as Disney+ and Hulu Bundle with ads for entertainment-focused customers.
- MyKids includes Disney+ in the listed offering.
- Signature packages and other current offers may include Disney+, Hulu Bundle with ads and ESPN-related services depending on eligibility.
These packages can change. Promotional rates, standard prices, taxes, equipment charges, regional sports fees and local-channel availability all affect the actual cost. Current availability should be checked on DIRECTV’s streaming-app eligibility page and relevant package pages.
What customers should check before changing packages
- Confirm the service type. DIRECTV satellite and DIRECTV streaming products do not have identical package rules or app features.
- Check the exact package. “Selected packages” does not mean every plan includes Disney+, Hulu or an ESPN service.
- Verify equipment requirements. Some integrated app experiences require a Gemini device, even when a service may be available through another method.
- Check local ABC availability. ABC stations vary by market. A national Disney agreement does not guarantee the same local affiliate in every ZIP code.
- Review existing subscriptions. An included entitlement may be a separate promotional subscription rather than a replacement for an existing Disney+, Hulu or ESPN account. Confirm whether both accounts are being billed.
- Compare promotional and regular pricing. Introductory rates may last only one or two months. Read the post-promotion price and any additional fees.
Does ESPN access include every sports event?
No. Access to ESPN’s television networks or a particular ESPN streaming service does not guarantee access to every event associated with ESPN, ABC, college conferences or professional leagues.

Sports rights can be divided among ESPN networks, ABC, ESPN+, conference networks, regional sports networks, league services and other distributors. A package that includes ESPN may still lack a specific game or event carried elsewhere.
What changed after the 2024 agreement?
The immediate result was the return of Disney’s linear channels to DIRECTV. The longer-term significance was the push toward more flexible packaging: a household might choose a sports-focused bundle, an entertainment-focused bundle, a traditional full live-TV plan or a combination of live channels and streaming apps.
That flexibility involves trade-offs. A broad package offers a more complete channel lineup and familiar live-TV features but may cost more. A genre package can reduce unwanted channels but may omit local stations, regional sports or particular Disney networks. Standalone streaming services can be cheaper for a narrowly defined need, but they may not provide local ABC, a traditional channel guide or DVR functionality.
Today’s DIRECTV genre-pack and entertainment-pack pages show how that strategy has developed. They are current commercial offerings, not proof that every feature or price was written into the original 2024 announcement.

ESPN, ABC-owned stations and other Disney networks returned after a roughly two-week blackout when Disney and DIRECTV reached their September 14, 2024 agreement in principle. The deal also opened the door to Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ through selected DIRECTV plans.
The key qualification is that restoration did not create one identical experience for every account. Service type, package, market, equipment, promotions and existing subscriptions still matter. The most consequential part of the agreement was not simply that ESPN came back; it was that the dispute accelerated the shift toward genre-based pay-TV packages with streaming services built into the offer.
