The Epstein birthday book is a 238-page bound album titled The First Fifty Years, reportedly prepared by Ghislaine Maxwell for Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th birthday in 2003. A digital copy later became part of records released by the House Oversight Committee. Its pages include messages and illustrations, some attributed to well-known people—but an attributed entry, by itself, does not prove who wrote it or that its named subject knew about or took part in Epstein’s crimes.

What was the Epstein birthday book?

The First Fifty Years was a bound album assembled for Epstein’s 50th birthday in 2003. TIME describes it as 238 pages and says Maxwell prepared it. The reported sections cover family, friends, girlfriends, and assistants, and include messages, photographs, drawings, and illustrations. TIME’s account of the released album describes its contents and selected entries.

The physical album and the later digital release are distinct: the former is the bound birthday book; the latter is a document copy made public through a congressional records release. The committee’s materials establish the stated path by which it obtained and released estate records, not forensic authentication of each page or signature.

How did it become public?

  1. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer issued a subpoena to Epstein’s estate on August 25, 2025, according to the committee.

  2. The estate provided records to the committee. On September 8, 2025, the committee announced that it was releasing estate-provided records pursuant to the subpoena and linked the records. The committee’s release notice describes that pathway.

  3. In a separate statement, Ranking Member Robert Garcia said the committee had secured the birthday book. Garcia described it as containing a note from Trump that Trump had said did not exist. That is Garcia’s characterization of the committee’s position, not a forensic finding about authorship. Garcia’s statement describes the committee’s account of receiving it.

What are the most striking reported entries?

The note bearing Donald Trump’s name

TIME reports a note and drawing attributed to Trump, including the line: “Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.” Trump has repeatedly denied writing the letter, according to TIME. The wording should therefore be understood as text in a disputed note bearing his name, not as authenticated proof that he wrote it.

The entry attributed to Peter Mandelson

TIME reports an entry attributed to Peter Mandelson in the book’s “friends” section. It begins, “Once upon a time, an intelligent, sharp-witted man they call ‘mysterious’ parachuted into my life,” and later says, “But wherever he is in the world, he remains my best pal!” Those are lines printed in an entry reported as Mandelson’s; the quotation alone does not independently establish authorship.

Bill Clinton and other material

TIME says Bill Clinton was listed among the “friends” and describes a note attributed to him. Its report also describes a photograph with a partially redacted caption concerning a purported transaction involving Trump; a young woman’s face is redacted. The caption is not independently verified by the description, and the redaction should not be used to speculate about the person’s identity.

What does a name or entry establish?

A name in the album or a reported attribution is not, on its own, evidence that the named person wrote the entry, knew about Epstein’s crimes, or participated in them. The committee’s release establishes that records supplied by the estate were made public through congressional oversight. The reporting describes visible content and attributions, but the cited materials do not authenticate every contributor’s handwriting or establish criminal knowledge or involvement for everyone named.

That distinction matters especially when a page is described as “by” a public figure. A careful account separates what the page visibly contains, who a source says it is attributed to, and what has actually been verified. The available committee statements and TIME reporting do not supply a page-by-page forensic authentication.

Why the book drew attention

The album combines private birthday tributes with names familiar from public life, and the disputed Trump-attributed note became a focus of political argument after the committee obtained the book. Comer criticized Democrats on the committee for “cherry-picking documents and politicizing information received from the Epstein Estate today.” That was his characterization of the dispute, not a factual finding about the album’s authenticity.

The book is also only one part of the records released in the broader oversight process. A separate September 2, 2025 committee release involved 33,295 pages of DOJ-provided Epstein-related records; that figure does not describe the birthday album, whose reported length is 238 pages.
