He linked their distance to a serious disagreement over his decision to pursue music without telling his father first. The account describes their relationship at that time—not its status today.
What Enrique Iglesias said in 2007
The interview’s headline captured Enrique’s description: “My dad and I seldom speak; we’re distant and see little of each other.” He put it plainly in the conversation: “The fact of the matter is that we seldom speak.” He also said, “Yes, we are distanced from one another and each lives his own life. And that we see little of each other, yes, we see little of each other.”

His account was about limited contact and separate lives. It does not, by itself, establish a permanent estrangement or prove that the two had a feud.
Why their relationship became strained
Enrique recalled a serious disagreement when he was 18. Julio found it strange that his son had entered the music business without telling him and then appeared with a record deal. Enrique said he left home and did not look back. In the interview, he rejected professional rivalry as the explanation for the situation.

The 2005 reunion—and what followed
People en Español reported that Enrique and Julio reunited at the December 2005 funeral of Enrique’s grandfather, Julio Iglesias Puga, after almost two years apart. Enrique recalled arriving in Madrid, hugging his father and spending the day with him. The article says their contact remained limited afterward.

A 2025 EL PAÍS profile recalled Enrique saying at a 2010 Madrid press conference that he and Julio had seen each other twice in the preceding decade. The profile also quoted Julio describing himself as not very close to his children and saying frequent travel had left him without enough time with them. These are retrospective remarks; they provide context for the family’s public account of distance, but do not establish what the relationship is like now.

Read as a historical account, the 2007 interview documents what Enrique said about his father and their limited contact then. It should not be treated as confirmation of their private relationship in 2026.
