Emmanuel is an emu at Knuckle Bump Farms in South Florida, and his interruptions became the point of Taylor Blake’s farm videos: as she explained the animals to the camera, he would enter the shot, investigate or peck at the phone, and derail the narration. Blake’s exasperated refrain—“Emmanuel, don’t do it!”—turned those interruptions into a viral catchphrase in July 2022.
Who is Emmanuel?
Emmanuel is an emu at Knuckle Bump Farms, a South Florida hobby farm. Taylor Blake films and narrates videos about the farm’s animals. The clips that drew widespread attention paired her explanations with a recurring interruption: Emmanuel coming into frame and getting close to the camera. NPR’s July 18, 2022 report and The Independent’s coverage that day described the pattern.
Why did the videos catch on?
The joke was easy to recognize and repeat. Blake would try to continue her farm explanation while Emmanuel moved toward the phone, then address him as if he were deliberately interrupting. In NPR’s transcript, she says, “Emmanuel, don’t do it. Emmanuel, don’t choose violence today.” The interruption and her running commentary made a simple, recurring gag out of otherwise educational farm videos.
Blake also joked to WESH that “Emmanuel has always had a hatred of two things. One of them is phones, and the other one is buttons.” That is her humorous characterization of the clips, not evidence about why an emu approaches a camera. WESH’s July 19, 2022 report carries the remark.

From farm videos to late-night television
The videos’ viral burst came in July 2022. On July 21–22, Blake appeared in a segment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Emmanuel himself did not travel to the studio: the Los Angeles Times reported that a puppet represented the interrupting emu while the real bird remained in Florida. Fallon echoed the catchphrase: “Emmanuel, no, don’t do it. You’re being a menace!” The Los Angeles Times covered the appearance on July 22, 2022.
What happened after the viral moment?
The October 2022 bird-flu outbreak
In October 2022, Knuckle Bump Farms faced an avian-influenza outbreak. Contemporary reporting said more than 50 birds died and Emmanuel became seriously ill. KPBS/NPR reported on the outbreak on October 17, 2022. That is a dated account, not a current health update. The farm’s current pages do not provide a dated veterinary report establishing Emmanuel’s present condition, so the 2022 coverage should not be read as proof that he is ill now—or as confirmation of his recovery.
