Elton John said an eye infection he contracted in the south of France in July 2024 caused him to lose sight in his right eye. He first spoke publicly about the illness in September 2024, describing limited vision in one eye and a slow recovery. In later interviews, he described having no sight in his right eye and said his left eye was also not good.
What happened to Elton John’s eye?
John connected the vision loss to an infection he said he contracted in the south of France in July 2024. The account comes from his public statements and interviews; the reporting does not include a diagnosis or information from his treating clinicians.
On September 3, 2024, John said he had been dealing with a severe eye infection over the summer. He wrote that it had left him with “only limited vision in one eye,” and that healing was “an extremely slow process.” He said it would take time before sight returned to the affected eye. ABC News reported his statement, as did The Guardian.

ABC News covered the interview. |

These are the effects he has publicly described; the available accounts do not quantify his vision or describe what accommodations he uses.
Can Elton John see now?
The latest detailed account in the sources here is from November 2025. John then said he had lost sight in his right eye, that his left eye was not good, and that the preceding 15 months had been challenging. Separate coverage mentioned treatment and some improvement in his left eye, but that report does not establish a clinical measurement or diagnosis. No update here confirms his medical status in 2026, so it would be inaccurate to state that he can or cannot see now as a current fact.

What is—and is not—known
John’s account establishes the timing and personal impact as he described them. It does not establish the infection’s cause or organism, the precise medical diagnosis, how the infection affected his vision, what treatment he received, or whether his sight will return. His September description of limited vision and later description of no sight in the right eye are statements made at different points in time, not a clinician’s assessment of a prognosis.
