Spoilers for the “Elsbeth” Season 2 finale, “Ramen Holiday.” The prison warden, Mama Martin, killed Alex Modarian to stop him from exposing her black-market operation. The episode pairs that mystery with “Suspect Tango,” a musical homage to “Chicago,” and a farewell for Kaya as she leaves for a Washington, D.C.-based task force.

The finale brings back a group of familiar faces from earlier cases, turning the prison into a reunion of people Elsbeth helped send away. The confirmed guest performers include Stephen Moyer, Retta, Gina Gershon, Elizabeth Lail, Arian Moayed, André De Shields, Alyssa Milano, and Mary-Louise Parker. Donna Lynne Champlin joins the episode as Mama Martin, the warden. TV Insider identifies the returning cast and Champlin’s role.
Who killed Alex in the finale?
Mama Martin is the killer. Alex planned to meet with the district attorney and trade information about the black market Martin ran inside the prison in exchange for a transfer. Martin killed him to keep that operation from being exposed, according to TVLine’s finale recap. The reveal makes the warden—not one of the inmates Elsbeth previously helped convict—the person at the center of the murder mystery.

What is the song in “Ramen Holiday”?
The musical sequence is called “Suspect Tango,” an homage to “Cell Block Tango” from Chicago. The returning guest stars perform as Elsbeth imaginatively interprets the prisoners’ motives. CBS previewed the Chicago homage before the broadcast, and TV Insider reports the “Suspect Tango” title.
Showrunner and executive producer Jonathan Tolins said the idea began with the prison setting and the possibility of bringing back earlier guest stars: “Very early on, we thought it would be fun to do a murder in prison, and wouldn’t it be fun if we could get some of our previous guest stars to be prisoners?” He described the music choice this way: “We did want to do something special, and a lot of people have said, ‘Well, you have to do a musical number,’ and ‘Cell Block Tango’ felt like the natural thing.” Tolins discussed the finale’s conception in a CinemaBlend interview published before the episode aired.

Does Kaya leave “Elsbeth”?
Yes. Wagner and Kaya help get Elsbeth out of prison, and she returns to the precinct in time for Kaya’s farewell. Kaya is leaving to join a task force based in Washington, D.C. Elsbeth tells her colleagues she believes she is needed where she is. The episode makes Kaya’s departure part of the finale’s closing emotional beat, alongside the resolution of Alex’s murder.
