In September 2020, Elon Musk said he would not take a COVID-19 vaccine when one became available. By April 2021, he was publicly saying he supported COVID-19 vaccines. In a December 2021 interview, he said he had been vaccinated while opposing vaccine mandates. Later comments documented by the CDC in 2023 were more critical, so the earlier headline is a record of a shift in his public statements—not a description of his current position.
What Musk said about taking a COVID vaccine in 2020
On September 29, 2020, CBS San Francisco reported that Musk told journalist Kara Swisher in a New York Times podcast interview that he would not take a COVID-19 vaccine when one became available. The report quoted him saying, “I’m not at risk for Covid, nor are my kids.” This captures his stated intention at that time; it does not establish whether he later acted on it.

How he explained the delay in April 2021
On April 7, 2021, Musk clarified his public position in a statement reproduced by Futurism: “To be clear, I do support vaccines in general and COVID vaccines specifically. The science is unequivocal.” He also wrote, “In very rare cases, there is an allergic reaction, but this is easily addressed with an EpiPen.” That is Musk’s own wording, not medical guidance.

Futurism also reported Musk later explaining that he had held off because “someone else would benefit more” and because he already “had some immunity to it already.” The report said it was unclear which earlier remark he was referring to. His explanation should therefore be understood as his later account, not as a definitive explanation of the 2020 interview.

What he said about vaccination and mandates in December 2021
Mediaite reported on December 13, 2021, that Musk told TIME he was vaccinated and described himself as “very, very pro-vaccination.” In the same interview, he said, “But by the same token, I am against forcing people to be vaccinated.” The remarks distinguish personal vaccination and support for vaccines from opposition to mandates; they are not contradictory claims about the same question.
Mediaite’s report on the TIME interview attributes those statements to Musk.

Why the 2021 statement is not his latest established view
The CDC’s August 21, 2023 State of Vaccine Confidence Insights Report: Quarter 1, 2023 described later vaccine-critical comments by Musk. It said he expressed concern that an updated COVID-19 vaccine did more harm than good and reported major side effects after receiving an updated dose. The government report documents those later remarks; it does not establish Musk’s views as of October 8, 2026.
The CDC’s 2023 report provides that later context. Taken together, the dated record shows a stated intention not to vaccinate in 2020, explicit support for vaccination in 2021, opposition to mandates, and more critical comments reported in 2023. It does not support applying one timeless label to his position.
