In a May 30, 2025 report, The Guardian relayed an allegation from New York Times reporting that Musk had told people his ketamine use was affecting his bladder. What did the report say about Musk and bladder problems?
The Guardian’s May 30, 2025 article attributed the account to the New York Times: people told the Times that Musk had said he took so much ketamine that it was affecting his bladder. This should be understood as a reported allegation, not a verified account of a diagnosis. The Guardian was relaying the Times’ reporting; it was not presenting medical records or a clinician’s assessment.
The Guardian also contrasted the alleged account with Musk’s earlier public description of using a “small amount” of ketamine about once every two weeks. In a March 2024 interview with Don Lemon, as reported by the Associated Press, Musk said he had a prescription and described using ketamine during negative mood states. AP quoted him saying, “If you’ve used too much ketamine, you can’t really get work done,” followed by, “I have a lot of work.” These comments provide context about his earlier public statements; they do not confirm or refute the later allegation about bladder symptoms.

What can chronic ketamine use do to the bladder?
Medical literature associates chronic ketamine use with urinary problems such as urgency, frequent urination, painful urination, pelvic pain, and blood in the urine. A 2024 open-access case report by Olivier Rahier and coauthors described three patients with ketamine-associated bladder changes, including thickened or deformed bladder walls. Some cases also involved the upper urinary tract.
The report documents three cases, not how common these problems are, and it says nothing about Musk’s health. Its authors note that diagnosis can be challenging because symptoms may resemble other urinary or bladder conditions. They describe stopping ketamine as a fundamental treatment step and say surgery may be needed in selected cases; that is general clinical information, not a treatment plan for any individual.
