At Donald Trump’s January 20, 2025, inauguration celebration at Washington’s Capital One Arena, Elon Musk touched his chest and extended his right arm upward, palm down, before making a similar motion toward the crowd behind him. The gesture drew comparisons to a Nazi salute. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called it an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, while experts quoted by the Associated Press (AP) described it as fascist or Nazi. The available reporting does not establish Musk’s intent.

What happened at Capital One Arena?

Musk addressed Trump supporters at the arena after Trump’s inauguration. Reuters reported that Musk thanked the crowd, said “My heart goes out to you,” touched his chest with his right hand, then extended the arm upward with his palm down. He turned and made a similar gesture toward the crowd behind him. AP described the same basic sequence.

The straight-arm motion prompted viewers to compare it to the Nazi salute. The physical action, the interpretations of it, and the public reaction are separate parts of the story: footage and reporting describe the gesture, but neither by itself establishes what Musk meant.

What did the ADL and other experts say?

The ADL’s interpretation

The ADL said the gesture appeared to be an awkward movement made in a moment of enthusiasm, rather than a Nazi salute. AP reproduced its statement: “It seems that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge.” The organization also urged people to give one another “a bit of grace” and “the benefit of the doubt.”

Experts who read it differently

AP quoted Kurt Braddock, an American University communications professor who studies extremism, radicalization, and terrorism, calling the gesture a fascist salute and saying “people shouldn’t doubt what they saw.” Braddock also said, “I’m skeptical it was on purpose.” Efraim Zuroff, retired head of the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Jerusalem office and formerly the organization’s top Nazi hunter, said he saw it as a Nazi salute and added, “He has to explain himself.” These are attributed assessments, not a settled finding about Musk’s intent.

How did Musk respond?

Musk dismissed the criticism on X as a tired “everyone is Hitler” attack. Reuters reported that the video clip Musk posted cut away from the podium during the first gesture. That describes the clip; the reporting does not establish why it was edited.

Why did the movement evoke the Nazi salute?

Al Jazeera’s historical explainer describes the Nazi salute as an outstretched right arm with the palm down, used as an official greeting in Nazi Germany. It traces related straight-arm forms through Italian fascism and notes the earlier Bellamy salute, once used with the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. That history helps explain why the motion was contentious, but resemblance alone cannot determine the meaning of Musk’s particular gesture.

How did the public react?

AP reported that white nationalist and far-right figures celebrated or welcomed the gesture online, and that reactions in Europe were sharply critical. The response from extremist groups is part of the event’s public impact; it does not prove what Musk intended.
