Elon Musk responded to Billie Eilish on November 18, 2025, after she criticized his wealth in Instagram Stories and called him a profanity-laden insult. His reply—“She’s not the sharpest tool in the shed”—was a personal dismissal rather than a detailed answer to her proposals about using extreme wealth to address hunger, clean water, environmental protection, and Gaza reconstruction.
Elon Musk responded to Billie Eilish on November 18, 2025, after the singer criticized him in a series of Instagram Stories. Musk’s reply was brief and personal: “She’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.” It did not directly address Eilish’s arguments about extreme wealth, hunger, clean water, endangered species, or rebuilding Gaza.
Eilish had posted the criticism five days earlier, on November 13, after resharing graphics from the European advocacy organization My Voice, My Choice. The graphics focused on the possibility that Musk could become the world’s first trillionaire and imagined how such a fortune might be used for public benefit.
What Billie Eilish said about Elon Musk
Eilish reshared images presenting Musk as having, or being on track to have, a fortune of $1 trillion. The graphics listed hypothetical uses for that money, including ending hunger, expanding access to clean water, protecting endangered species, and helping rebuild Gaza.

She then added a profanity-laden insult aimed at Musk, calling him a “fucking pathetic pussy bitch coward.” The phrase “pathetic coward,” used in some headlines, is therefore a shortened version of her longer wording rather than a complete quotation.
Her posts combined a personal attack with a broader political and economic criticism: the argument that extreme private wealth could instead be directed toward urgent social, humanitarian, and environmental needs.
Musk’s response was a one-line insult
Musk answered on X on November 18, 2025, in response to a post about Eilish’s criticism. His entire documented response was: “She’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.”
That was a dismissive personal retort, not a point-by-point response to Eilish’s proposals. The available reporting does not establish that Musk offered a detailed argument about philanthropy, disputed each of the causes named in the graphics, threatened Eilish, or continued the exchange with a longer public debate.
Why Eilish was already talking about billionaires
The Instagram posts followed Eilish’s appearance at the WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards on October 29, 2025. During her acceptance speech, she criticized billionaires for accumulating vast fortunes and urged wealthy people to use their money to benefit the public.

The event also highlighted Eilish’s own charitable plans. Stephen Colbert announced that she would direct $11.5 million from her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour toward food equity, climate justice, and reducing carbon pollution.
That context helps explain why the discussion of Musk’s potential fortune became a target for Eilish’s criticism. Her position was not simply about one celebrity disagreement; it was part of a wider argument about the responsibilities attached to extraordinary wealth.
Was Elon Musk already a trillionaire when Eilish criticized him?
No—not according to the contemporaneous November 2025 framing. At that time, reports described Musk as potentially becoming, or being on track to become, the first trillionaire. That was not the same as saying he already possessed $1 trillion in cash or had definitively reached a $1 trillion net worth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPart of the discussion involved Tesla’s proposed 2025 CEO Performance Award. Company filings described the proposal as a performance-based equity award with a potential value approaching $1 trillion if demanding operational and market-capitalization targets were met. It was not cash that had already been paid to Musk, and its headline potential value should not be treated as an existing fortune.
A more precise description of the original dispute is therefore: Eilish criticized Musk in November 2025 while he was widely discussed as a possible first trillionaire, amid speculation about his holdings and a potential Tesla compensation award.

Later update: Musk crossed the trillion-dollar threshold in 2026
The financial context changed after the social-media exchange. On June 12, 2026, Forbes reported that SpaceX began trading publicly and that the IPO increased Musk’s estimated fortune to approximately $1.1 trillion. CBS likewise reported that he crossed the threshold on paper following SpaceX’s market debut.
Forbes identified Musk as the first person to reach trillionaire status by its estimate. This later milestone should not be projected backward onto Eilish’s November 2025 posts. Her criticism came when the trillionaire discussion was still about a possible future milestone; the later increase was attributed to SpaceX’s public-market debut and valuation.
Net-worth estimates are estimates, not a statement that an individual has $1 trillion sitting in a bank account. They can change with share prices, private-company valuations, ownership calculations, taxes, debt, and the terms of compensation awards. In this case, the relevant distinction is between the 2025 speculation and the 2026 estimate following SpaceX’s IPO.
The personal exchange and the wealth debate are different stories
The episode has two separate layers.
- The personal exchange: Eilish used an insult-heavy Instagram Story to criticize Musk, and Musk answered on X with a short insult about her intelligence.
- The substantive issue: Eilish’s posts questioned how a fortune on the scale of $1 trillion should be used and pointed to hunger, clean water, environmental protection, and Gaza reconstruction as possible priorities.
Musk’s documented response addressed the first layer but not the second. It is accurate to say that he fired back at Eilish. It is not accurate to say that he publicly rebutted her charitable proposals in detail.

They do not, by themselves, prove that Eilish caused Musk’s later wealth milestone, that the two have an ongoing feud, or that Musk made a verified threat. The later trillion-dollar estimate followed SpaceX’s IPO and market valuation, not any known consequence of Eilish’s posts.

Eilish’s tour-related giving provided one example of the approach she was advocating. Musk’s one-line response left that policy argument unanswered in the sources reviewed.
