Elon Musk did publicly entertain the idea of buying MSNBC, but he never made a documented acquisition offer. The episode began with a November 2024 exchange on X after Comcast announced a planned spinoff of several cable networks. That announcement was widely misread as proof that MSNBC was for sale. It was not: Comcast announced a separation into a new company, not a sale to Musk or anyone else.

What Elon Musk actually said

On November 22, 2024, Donald Trump Jr. tagged Musk in an X post suggesting that Musk buy MSNBC. Musk replied: “How much does it cost?”

Musk then participated in additional jokes, memes and replies about acquiring the network and changing its programming. Joe Rogan joined the exchange by joking that he would take Rachel Maddow’s job if Musk bought MSNBC, and Musk responded favorably to some of the proposals. Contemporaneous coverage by Vanity Fair documented the exchange.

The posts were genuine and newsworthy, but their meaning has often been overstated. They showed public curiosity, interest or trolling; they did not establish that Musk had begun a conventional takeover attempt.

Was Musk’s reply a formal offer?

No. There is no documented signed bid, financing commitment, due-diligence process, merger agreement, regulatory filing or confirmed negotiation with Comcast showing that Musk made an acquisition offer for MSNBC.

The most accurate description is that Musk floated, joked about or publicly entertained the idea. “How much does it cost?” was a rhetorical question in a social-media exchange, not a verified valuation or purchase proposal. Lead Stories likewise found no evidence that the posts constituted a formal offer.

It is also too strong to state with certainty that the entire exchange was only a joke, because Musk’s private intentions cannot be established from the posts alone. What can be established is the absence of evidence for a real transaction.

Why people thought MSNBC was for sale

The rumor followed a Comcast announcement on November 20, 2024. Comcast said it planned to separate several cable-network assets—including MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, Syfy and Golf Channel—into a new, separately traded company.

That corporate structure was confused with a sale. The distinction matters:

Transaction What happens
Spinoff A parent separates a business and distributes shares in the new company to existing shareholders.
Sale An asset is transferred to a buyer in exchange for money, stock or other consideration.

Comcast’s plan was a spinoff. It did not announce that MSNBC had been placed on the market, and reporting at the time said Comcast’s position was that the assets were not for sale. A spinoff can create future strategic options, including a possible sale later, but the separation itself is not evidence of one. See Comcast’s original announcement and the Reuters-based account reproduced by Mint.

What happened to the cable networks?

The planned separation ultimately went ahead. Comcast completed the transaction on January 2, 2026, creating the independent publicly traded company Versant Media Group.

According to Comcast’s filings, eligible Comcast shareholders received Versant shares on a pro-rata basis at a ratio of one Versant share for every 25 Comcast shares held on the relevant record date. Versant began trading on Nasdaq under the ticker VSNT, and Comcast retained no ownership interest after the distribution.

The former MSNBC property was later identified as MS NOW. Versant’s portfolio also included CNBC, USA Network, Golf Channel, E!, Syfy, Oxygen and related digital properties. The Comcast 2025 Form 10-K and Versant’s January 2026 Form 8-K record the separation.

Why the idea went viral

The proposal combined several highly combustible subjects: billionaire ownership, political influence and the future of cable news.

  • Musk had become a prominent political actor and supporter of Donald Trump during the 2024 election.
  • He already owned X, making the prospect of acquiring a national news network especially provocative.
  • MSNBC was widely perceived as a liberal-leaning cable news outlet and had long been criticized by conservatives.
  • The surrounding jokes implied that Musk might reshape the network’s programming for a different political audience.
  • Trump Jr., Rogan and other participants turned a corporate-restructuring story into a viral political-media spectacle.

These factors explain the attention, but they do not prove that Musk had a business plan to purchase the network or turn it conservative. Ownership of X and political influence are not the same as legal ownership of a television network.

Could Musk theoretically have bought it?

In principle, an independent public company can be acquired, subject to corporate, financial and regulatory requirements. But that possibility should not be confused with the 2024 exchange.

A future transaction involving the separated assets could have required financing, shareholder approval and regulatory review. It would also have involved distribution contracts, affiliate relationships, debt, employees, brand rights, programming obligations and—depending on the assets—communications-law and media-ownership issues. Owning both a major social platform and a national news network could also have raised concerns about concentrated influence.

Comcast’s stated position at the time, however, was that the assets were not for sale. No credible purchase price was established, and Musk’s question about cost should not be presented as a valuation.

The precise verdict

Musk really did muse publicly about buying MSNBC in November 2024. The exchange began with Donald Trump Jr., included Musk’s “How much does it cost?” reply and expanded into jokes about the network’s programming. But there was no verified bid or documented acquisition process.

Comcast had announced a spinoff—not an immediate sale. That separation was completed in January 2026, with the former MSNBC property becoming MS NOW under independent company Versant. The available filings do not identify Musk as its buyer or owner.
