In a September 2021 statement to Page Six, Musk said, “We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms.” The Los Angeles Times reported his comments; Reuters also carried an account. This describes what Musk said at that point, not a permanent or legal status.

December 2021 and March 2022: A second child disclosed
Grimes said in a March 2022 Vanity Fair profile that their daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl, had been born by surrogate in December 2021. In the same interview, she described the relationship as “very fluid” and said, “I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid.” Vanity Fair’s profile is the source for her account.
2023: A third child and public legal filings
Reports disclosed a third child, Techno Mechanicus, in 2023. Retrospective accounts place his birth in June 2022, so the date of the birth and the later public disclosure should not be conflated. Retrospective timeline reporting recounts the disclosure and reported birth timing.

August 2024: Reported resolution
A later Yahoo Tech timeline says the Texas custody dispute was resolved in August 2024. The reporting cited here does not establish the precise terms or provide an authoritative court order, so it does not support a claim about the resulting custody arrangement.
