In interviews reported by The Australian Women’s Weekly and PerthNow, Varcoe and his wife, Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew, described how the illness affected everyday activity, parenting and work. It was a 2023 account, not a newly reported diagnosis.
What Neil Varcoe disclosed in 2023
The Australian Women’s Weekly reported in June 2023 that Varcoe had been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome after his energy did not return following viral illnesses. He described a sharp loss of stamina: at times, he could not walk to the end of his street and back without turning around. “I was sick for about three weeks and my energy went through the floor,” he said, as quoted by the magazine.
In a follow-up published on 20 June 2023, PerthNow quoted Varcoe describing how limited his energy could be: “Some days, I would only have the energy to shower before fatigue would wrap itself around me like chain mail.” The phrase “secret health battle” appeared in coverage of that disclosure; the underlying story was the couple’s account of living with the diagnosis and adapting to its effects.
How the illness affected family routines
Varcoe and Bartholomew described the strain of managing early parenthood while his capacity varied. On some days, he could read a story to the children but did not have enough energy to take part in bath time. Bartholomew said the family learned to recognize difficult days and arranged morning help. They also described changes to work, childcare and household routines.

These details come from the couple’s interview-based accounts. They illustrate what the family said they experienced; they are not an independent medical assessment of Varcoe’s condition.
What ME/CFS means in general
Chronic fatigue syndrome is also referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Australian Government information describes ME/CFS as a neurological condition and identifies post-exertional malaise as a central feature: symptoms can worsen after physical or mental activity. That general description helps explain why ordinary tasks may be difficult for some people with ME/CFS, but it does not establish which symptoms Varcoe experienced beyond those he and Bartholomew described.

The Australian Government announced in June 2024 that it had funded development of Australian clinical guidelines for ME/CFS. In the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing’s 2025 evidence review, prevalence was estimated at about 1% globally and an estimated 250,000 people in Australia. These are estimates, not exact counts; the review says figures depend on diagnostic methods and case definitions.

In a feature originally published in the May 2025 issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly, Bartholomew said Varcoe was getting better at the time of their interview and that the family’s move to Carcoar was partly intended to support his health. The feature said Varcoe lived in Carcoar while the rest of the family joined him on weekends and holidays. This is a later, family-reported observation—not a medical record or confirmation of his health status today.

What the coverage does—and does not—establish
