The ED had announced the attachment of three immovable properties, valued at approximately ₹10.11 crore, in connection with allegations that his film Enthiran copied writer Aarur Tamilnadan’s story Jiguba. The allegation is not a final finding of plagiarism or criminal guilt. A later order listed Shankar’s challenge for 15 June 2026, but the outcome of that listing has not been established here.
What happened to Shankar’s properties?
The Directorate of Enforcement’s Chennai Zonal Office said it issued a provisional attachment order on 17 February 2025 covering three immovable properties registered in Shankar’s name. The agency valued them at approximately ₹10.11 crore and announced the action on 20 February 2025 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. These are the ED’s figures; they do not mean the properties were finally confiscated.
On 11 March 2025, the Madras High Court stayed the attachment proceedings while considering Shankar’s challenge. Times of India reporting attributed this observation to the division bench: “The provisional attachment order should not have been issued, particularly when the stay against the criminal complaint was in operation for the past three years.” The report also said the court directed the ED to file a counter. A 23 March 2026 order in Shankar’s challenge records that the ED sought time after producing a Supreme Court order dated 3 February 2026, and lists the matter for 15 June 2026. The later outcome of that listing has not been established here, so the March 2025 stay should not be mistaken for a confirmed final resolution.

Why did the ED act?
According to the ED, its investigation followed a complaint filed by writer Aarur Tamilnadan on 19 May 2011 before the 13th Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Egmore, Chennai (CC No. 2067/2011). Tamilnadan alleged that the storyline of Enthiran, directed by Shankar, was copied from his story Jiguba. The ED described the complaint as alleging violations of the Copyright Act, 1957 and the Indian Penal Code, 1860. Those descriptions reflect the agency’s account of the allegation, not a judicial conclusion that copying or criminal wrongdoing occurred.
The ED said Shankar received ₹11.5 crore for work on Enthiran, including story development, screenplay, dialogues and direction. It also said an independent Film and Television Institute of India report found similarities in narrative structure, character development and themes between Jiguba and the film. The report itself is not available in the cited material, so its findings should be understood as the ED’s characterization. The agency also put the film’s worldwide gross at ₹290 crore; that figure is likewise attributed to the ED rather than independently verified box-office reporting. How the civil case differs from the ED proceedings
The earlier civil suit and the later ED action are separate parts of the dispute. A Times of India report published on 12 March 2025 said the Madras High Court dismissed Tamilnadan’s civil suit in June 2023. As reported, the court observed that copyright cannot be claimed over an idea or concept and that there was no evidence that Enthiran literally imitated Jiguba. That civil dismissal does not itself decide the subsequent challenge to the ED’s provisional attachment, nor should it be conflated with the criminal complaint referenced by the ED. What the attachment does—and does not—establish
- It was provisional: the ED announced an attachment order, not a final confiscation of the properties.
- It followed an allegation: the action arose from the claim that Enthiran copied Jiguba; the attachment announcement is not a finding that plagiarism or criminal guilt was proved.
- It was stayed by the High Court: the March 2025 stay interrupted the attachment proceedings while Shankar’s challenge was before the court.
- The later procedural outcome is unclear here: a March 2026 order set a June 2026 listing, but no result from that listing is established in the available account.
