Ed Sheeran was spotted with his wife, Cherry Seaborn, and their infant daughter in Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula in late March 2021, shortly after travelling to Australia to perform at a state memorial for music industry figure Michael Gudinski. The reported outing was in Sorrento—not central Melbourne—and came after Gudinski’s private funeral and public memorial had been held on separate dates.
Where Ed Sheeran was seen
PerthNow reported on 30 March 2021 that Sheeran was out with Seaborn and their baby in Sorrento, a town on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. He was pushing the pram as the family headed to Hotel Sorrento. A fan asked him for a selfie and noticed a tattoo honouring Gudinski. PerthNow’s report described the tattoo as Gudinski’s initials, “MG,” alongside a pointing-hand silhouette associated with Gudinski’s signature pose.

Why Sheeran travelled to Australia
Sheeran’s visit followed the death of Michael Gudinski, the Australian music industry executive who died aged 68. ABC reported that Sheeran travelled from the UK, quarantined in New South Wales, and then performed at Gudinski’s state memorial in Melbourne on 24 March 2021. ABC attributed details of Sheeran’s travel exemption and quarantine costs to a Frontier Touring spokesperson, who said Sheeran quarantined at his own expense. ABC’s memorial-day coverage reported on his appearance and performance.
Gudinski’s funeral and state memorial were different events
Gudinski’s private funeral took place in Melbourne on 10 March 2021. The public state memorial was held two weeks later, on 24 March, at Rod Laver Arena. The Victorian Government announced the memorial on 16 March, scheduled to begin at 7:07pm, with registration required and a livestream planned. The government announcement identified Gudinski as a music industry icon and proud Victorian. ABC’s earlier report covered the private funeral and its attendees. ABC’s funeral report

Sheeran’s performance at the memorial
At the state memorial, Sheeran performed a new song and spoke emotionally about Gudinski, whom he described as a “tornado of joy,” according to ABC’s coverage. ABC reported that about 7,200 people attended the event. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said: “To know him was to be changed — he left a mark on everyone he met.” ABC’s account of the memorial reported both the attendance figure and the tributes.
