AWS may reclaim Spot capacity, ordinarily with two minutes’ notice. On-Demand gives a fixed listed rate for the selected configuration and avoids Spot reclamation, so it is the simpler compute baseline when an interruption is unacceptable. To compare them fairly, include the cost and design needed to recover from a Spot interruption—not just the hourly rate.
How Spot and On-Demand differ for a continuous stream
| Comparison | EC2 Spot | EC2 On-Demand |
|---|---|---|
| Compute rate | Dynamic; varies by instance type and Spot capacity pool. AWS advertises savings of up to 90% versus On-Demand, a maximum—not a guaranteed discount for a particular India configuration. AWS Spot best practices | Fixed listed rate for the selected instance configuration, with no long-term commitment. AWS On-Demand pricing |
| Capacity continuity | AWS can interrupt an instance when it needs the capacity. AWS ordinarily provides a two-minute interruption notice; availability varies with supply and demand and is not guaranteed. AWS Spot best practices AWS Spot interruptions | Not subject to Spot reclamation. This does not prevent application, host, network, or YouTube ingest failures. |
| Typical fit | Flexible, restartable or fault-tolerant work that can move across capacity pools or recover from interruption. | A straightforward baseline for workloads that cannot tolerate Spot interruption or need more predictable compute billing. |
| 24/7 stream implication | Include failover or restart design, standby or replacement capacity, operational work, and likely viewer impact in the comparison. | Simpler for a single encoder, but redundancy and monitoring may still be needed for other failure modes. |
AWS says Spot instances are not suitable for workloads that are inflexible, stateful, fault-intolerant, or tightly coupled. Its guidance also describes flexible instance-type and Availability Zone choices and fault-tolerant design as ways to use Spot more effectively. Neither strategy guarantees that replacement capacity will be available when needed. AWS Spot best practices
How to estimate the India cost without inventing a monthly price
“India” is not enough to determine an EC2 bill. A useful estimate must identify the AWS Region and Availability Zone, instance type and size, operating system, and runtime. For Spot, also identify the relevant capacity pool and check its current price. Spot prices vary; On-Demand rates are fixed for the chosen configuration. Check AWS’s current rates when you build the estimate rather than treating the advertised maximum discount as a local quote. First-pass compute calculation
- Choose the encoder instance configuration and operating system, then select the AWS Region and Availability Zone.
- For a month-long estimate, calculate 24 hours Ă— the number of days in the billing period Ă— the selected hourly rate. Use the current On-Demand rate for the baseline or the current Spot rate for the specified capacity pool.
- For a Spot design, separately account for standby or replacement capacity and the recovery approach. A single Spot rate is not the cost of providing the same service level as an interruption-tolerant design.
- Add other billable items separately: storage volumes and snapshots, network data transfer, IP addresses if applicable, monitoring, taxes, and any failover capacity.
This is a budgeting method, not a quoted total. Without a specified configuration and bill of materials, a single “India monthly price” would be misleading.

Keep compute and video delivery costs separate
EC2 compute is the cost of running the encoder. Storage, networking and other AWS charges are separate. Amazon IVS’s India pricing table concerns delivery through a different managed streaming service; it is not an EC2 fee for sending an encoder stream to YouTube. Do not add IVS delivery-hour rates to an EC2-to-YouTube estimate unless you are separately choosing IVS as a service. Amazon IVS pricing
What Spot interruption means for a live YouTube channel
When AWS reclaims Spot capacity, the encoder process may stop and the live feed can be interrupted. AWS documents a two-minute interruption notice and a separate rebalance recommendation that can signal elevated interruption risk earlier. Build automation to respond to signals where possible; do not assume two minutes is enough for someone to rebuild an encoder manually. AWS Spot interruptions

A resilient setup might respond to an interruption signal by starting or promoting an encoder in another eligible pool or Availability Zone. That requires compatible configuration, access to the media source and stream credentials, and a tested way to switch or reconnect the output. Because Spot capacity is not guaranteed, using more pools improves flexibility but does not make a single Spot instance uninterrupted.
AWS has published a live-streaming case study describing Quortex’s containerized architecture using EC2 Spot. It demonstrates that Spot can be one component in an interruption-tolerant media system; it is not a price benchmark or a promise that a lone encoder will stay live. AWS Quortex case study

Size the encoder for YouTube, not just the instance bill
YouTube’s encoder guidance ties recommended settings to resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, the published recommended ingest bitrate is 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not EC2 instance specifications or estimates of bandwidth delivered to viewers. Choose a stream quality your available upload bitrate can sustain, test before going live, and monitor stream health. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
YouTube’s setup workflow uses a server URL and stream key, and its documentation describes encoder software and standalone hardware as alternatives. Those details define the output workflow, not a requirement to buy any particular encoder product for this pricing decision. Protect the stream key as a credential and configure it in the encoder or deployment system that sends the feed to YouTube. YouTube live streaming encoder setup

Choose the compute model against your reliability target
Choose On-Demand for a simpler single-encoder baseline
On-Demand is easier to budget and reason about if the channel depends on one persistent encoder and even a short interruption is costly. AWS recommends On-Demand for applications that cannot be interrupted. It does not remove the need to handle encoder software crashes, host or network problems, or YouTube ingest issues. If the stream needs higher availability, plan and test a second encoder and a failover method rather than treating the hourly rate as a reliability guarantee. AWS On-Demand pricing YouTube encoder guidance
Choose Spot only when the design can absorb interruption
Spot is a candidate when the encoding workload can restart or shift across capacity pools and the channel can tolerate the recovery behavior—or when you have implemented and tested redundancy that limits its impact. Compare the complete Spot-based design with On-Demand at the same reliability target. The lower Spot compute quote may be offset by extra capacity and the work of operating failover.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel 24/7, rather than manage an EC2 encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not camera-based live broadcasting. Start the free first day.
