A black picture in an EC2-to-YouTube Live stream can come from the captured source, the encoder, the connection to YouTube, or playback. First find the earliest point where video disappears: check the EC2 source, the encoder preview, YouTube Live Control Room, and the published playback separately. That tells you which part to troubleshoot instead of changing settings at random.
Find where the picture first goes black
Check the same stream at each stage. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and Live Control Room preview, then monitoring stream health. Comparing those views is a practical way to locate the fault; the symptom alone does not identify a specific cause.
- EC2 source: Is the desktop, game, browser, window, or media you intend to show actually visible in the EC2 session?
- Encoder preview: Does the encoder show that source correctly before it reaches YouTube?
- YouTube Live Control Room: Is its preview black, degraded, or healthy? Check the stream-health indicators and any encoder errors.
- Published playback: If the Control Room preview looks right, check the public playback on another device or browser.
Also note whether audio continues and whether a local recording or archive contains video. Together, these observations help distinguish a source or capture problem from an ingest, network, or playback problem. YouTube’s guidance says that a healthy-looking encoder stream paired with problems downstream can indicate an outbound connection issue. If the EC2 source or encoder preview is black
Check the selected source and scene
Confirm that the intended display, game, window, browser, or media source is enabled and selected in the encoder’s current scene. If the source itself is not visible in the EC2 session, fix that before troubleshooting YouTube. If the source is visible on the desktop but black in the encoder preview, focus on the capture source and its configuration.

Check capture compatibility and graphics adapters
Display capture can behave differently depending on the operating system, capture method, graphics adapters, and software version. OBS documents adapter-related capture issues and method choices in guidance that is platform- and version-specific. Verify the EC2 instance and driver combination
If the instance is GPU-backed, identify its exact instance type and operating system, then use the corresponding AWS driver instructions. AWS notes that GPU instances need suitable drivers, and driver options vary by instance family and OS. NVIDIA’s driver guide describes supported categories and capabilities; it is not enough to know only that the machine is an EC2 instance.
A driver change is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix. Confirm that the driver guidance matches the instance family and OS before changing the installation.

If the encoder preview is black or degraded
YouTube recommends checking the audio and video sources routed to the encoder, looking for encoder errors in the live dashboard, checking CPU load, and updating the encoder software. A local recording can help establish whether the problem is already present before YouTube receives the stream.
Separate a source fault from an encoding or rendering problem
- If the local recording is also black, inspect the selected source and capture path first.
- If the local recording has video but the live encoder output does not, check the encoder’s live output, settings, and error messages.
- If video is choppy or the encoder reports overload, reduce unnecessary scene complexity and competing GPU work, then reassess the output.
OBS explains that composing and rendering scenes uses GPU resources. Simplifying a scene, closing other GPU-heavy programs, or reducing source resolution may help with overload or choppy output, but those symptoms do not prove that GPU load caused every black screen. If the encoder preview is healthy but YouTube is black
Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview, stream health, and encoder messages before changing capture sources. YouTube says that when the encoder stream looks healthy but the stream has problems, outbound internet connectivity can be the issue. In EC2, investigate the connection from that environment to YouTube rather than assuming the local capture is at fault.
If the stream will not start at all, confirm that the encoder is using the current YouTube stream key and that its configuration matches the selected YouTube stream. YouTube’s start-error guidance recommends replacing a stale or invalid key where appropriate. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the associated stream.

YouTube recommends testing settings before an event and monitoring stream health while live. Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into output formats for viewers, so if the encoder preview is healthy but public playback is black, check ingest status and playback separately rather than presuming the source is broken. If only published playback is black
If both the encoder preview and Live Control Room preview show video, test the published stream in a different browser or device and check whether the issue affects every viewer. This last split is a diagnostic inference: the supplied setup details do not identify a specific playback cause. Preserve the distinction between a problem visible in YouTube’s ingest preview and one seen only during playback.

The symptom does not reveal the encoder, operating system, instance type, source, or driver version. If the checks above do not isolate the stage, gather these details before choosing a driver, command, or platform-specific fix:
- EC2 instance type and operating system
- Encoder name and version
- Capture source and method (for example, display, window, game, or media)
- GPU and driver version, if applicable
- Whether the EC2 source, encoder preview, YouTube preview, and playback each show video
- Whether audio continues, a local recording has video, and the encoder or Live Control Room reports errors
