What is Earth Girls Are Easy about?
Valerie, played by Geena Davis, discovers that three visitors from the planet Jhazzala—Mac, Wiploc and Zeebo—have landed in her pool. As they enter her world in the San Fernando Valley, Valerie and her friend and co-worker Candy, played by Julie Brown, help the aliens navigate human life and local beauty culture. Mac is played by Jeff Goldblum, Wiploc by Jim Carrey and Zeebo by Damon Wayans.

The story mixes science-fiction comedy with musical numbers and romance. Its fish-out-of-water premise also gives it room to parody the fashion, beauty and social habits associated with Valley culture.
Who made the film?
Julien Temple directed the film from a screenplay credited to Julie Brown, Charlie Coffey and Terrence E. McNally. Brown’s 1984 song “Earth Girls Are Easy” supplied the title and starting point for the project. Her 1984 EP Goddess In Progress featured the song; the writing team later developed it into a musical comedy for Warner Bros., according to the American Film Institute (AFI) catalog. Turner Classic Movies (TCM) also describes Brown as adapting the song into a screenplay with McNally and collaborator Coffey: TCM’s film overview.

When did Earth Girls Are Easy come out?
The film is cataloged as a 1988 USA/UK production by the British Film Institute (BFI). Its US theatrical release was 12 May 1989, according to AFI. It screened at Toronto’s Festival of Festivals on 9 September 1988 before premiering in Hollywood on 2 May 1989 and opening in US theaters.
That distinction explains why both 1988 and 1989 appear in descriptions of the film: 1988 refers to its production/catalog year and Toronto screening, while 1989 marks its US theatrical opening.

What do the reported budget and opening figures mean?
AFI reports an $11 million production budget, attributed to a 1989 article by BAM. It also reports an opening-weekend gross of $892,742, attributed to the Los Angeles Times in 1989. The latter is an opening-weekend figure, not the film’s lifetime gross.
