The Dyatlov Pass incident was a 1959 disaster in which nine experienced hikers died in the northern Urals after their tent was found cut and abandoned. Russia’s 2020 prosecutorial review concluded that an avalanche forced the group outside; a peer-reviewed 2021 study then modeled how a delayed, wind-loaded slab could have formed despite the site’s apparently gentle slope. Together, those findings make an avalanche the leading explanation, but they do not reconstruct every movement or answer every question from the night.
What happened at Dyatlov Pass?
In February 1959, nine hikers on an expedition in the northern Ural Mountains died after an emergency at their camp near what is now known as Dyatlov Pass. Searchers found the group’s tent cut and abandoned. Bodies were located at several points down the slope and near the forest, including beside a cedar. The deaths involved hypothermia and serious traumatic injuries.
The basic facts are well established: the party left its shelter in severe winter conditions, moved away from the tent, and failed to return alive. The uncertainty concerns the trigger, the order of events after departure, and how to interpret individual injuries and other pieces of evidence from a 1959 investigation.
Why did the hikers leave the tent?
The tent was found cut, and the hikers went downhill toward the tree line rather than remaining in their shelter. Russia’s 2020 prosecutorial review reconstructed this as an emergency evacuation caused by an avalanche after a sharp deterioration in weather. In the reconstruction reported by Interfax, visibility was between 6 and 16 metres and the group moved about 50 metres from the tent before it could no longer be seen.

Those distances are part of Deputy Prosecutor Andrey Kuryakov’s account of the official reconstruction, not independent eyewitness measurements of every moment. Kuryakov was quoted as saying: “That night visibility was from 6 to 16 metres, and the tourists moved 50 metres away.” The statement helps explain how a party could lose its tent almost immediately in a storm, but it does not by itself establish the exact path each person took.
Did an avalanche kill the Dyatlov group?
The most careful answer is that an avalanche is the official explanation for why the group abandoned the tent, and that exposure combined with injuries is the reported cause of death. The 2020 review did not establish every detail as a scientific certainty. Its conclusion is a prosecutorial reconstruction of the available case material.
Avalanche specialists Johan Gaume and Alexander M. Puzrin supplied a separate line of support in a peer-reviewed paper published in Communications Earth & Environment on 28 January 2021. They did not claim to have discovered a surviving record of a slab release. Instead, they modeled a physical scenario that could produce an avalanche at the camp and account for several features that had made older avalanche explanations controversial.
That distinction matters. The model shows that the proposed mechanism is physically plausible; it does not prove that the modeled slab actually released on the fatal night. The official finding and the scientific model therefore reinforce one another without becoming the same kind of evidence.

How the delayed-slab model works
A slope that looked too gentle
One objection to a conventional avalanche account was the average slope near the tent. The terrain did not resemble the steep starting zones associated with many obvious avalanches. Gaume and Puzrin’s analysis treats the local topography as irregular rather than as one uniform incline. A small change in the slope profile could create a locally hazardous starting area even when the broad average appears modest.
The cut made for the tent
To install the tent, the party cut into the snow-covered slope. In the model, that cut acted as a local disturbance in the snow structure. Beneath the surface, a weak layer could remain buried while a denser slab accumulated above it. The cut did not have to trigger an immediate collapse; it could instead help create conditions in which a later release became possible.
Wind loading and a long delay
The proposed mechanism includes strong katabatic winds—cold air flowing downslope—that transported snow and deposited it above the tent. This process could load the slab gradually. Gaume and Puzrin estimated a release delay of approximately 7.5 to 13.5 hours after the slope was cut, allowing the party to settle in before the failure.
Severe injuries without a large avalanche
The paper argues that a relatively small slab could produce severe but non-fatal chest or skull injuries. That addresses another objection: the injuries were serious, yet the scene did not necessarily require a massive avalanche that would bury the entire camp. In the authors’ words, irregular topography, the cut made to install the tent, and snow deposited by strong katabatic winds could combine after a suitable delay to release a slab causing severe non-fatal injuries consistent with the autopsy results.

This is a modeled explanation, not a direct observation of the 1959 event. Its value is that it connects several conditions—terrain, snow structure, wind, delay and injury pattern—in one physically coherent scenario.
What happened after the hikers left?
The prosecutorial reconstruction says the group moved toward the forest and a cedar, where they could obtain shelter and fuel, and later made attempts either to survive there or to return toward the tent. The bodies’ locations down the slope and near the trees are consistent with a movement away from the exposed camp, followed by a failed effort to endure the weather.
However, the reviewed accounts do not establish a complete, minute-by-minute timeline. They do not settle why the party traveled in particular directions, who moved first, or how every person’s final position relates to the others. Visibility, wind, darkness, terrain and injuries would all have complicated movement. A responsible account should therefore separate the broad sequence—tent abandonment, descent, forest area, deaths—from claims about exact individual actions.
What did the 2020 Russian investigation conclude?
Russia’s prosecutors announced in 2020 that an avalanche forced the hikers out of the tent and that cold and injuries killed them. Deputy Prosecutor Andrey Kuryakov presented the reconstruction described in contemporaneous reporting. The review treated the abrupt weather deterioration, poor visibility and the group’s movement toward the forest as consequences of an avalanche emergency.

The announcement was an official state conclusion, not a newly published full case file. The sources reporting it do not provide a complete direct review of every original 1959 document or every expert report. That limitation does not erase the finding, but it means readers should not present it as if all underlying evidence has been independently re-audited in a modern scientific investigation.
What later field observations add
In a 2022 follow-up, Gaume and Puzrin reported that three later expeditions documented avalanches at Dyatlov Pass. Those observations establish that avalanches occur at the site and therefore support the environmental plausibility of an avalanche scenario.
They do not show that an avalanche released on the night in February 1959. Weather, snowpack structure and local loading vary from year to year. A later avalanche is evidence about what the terrain can do, not a direct recording of what happened decades earlier.
Comparing the main explanations
| Account | Evidence type | What it explains | What remains unresolved |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 prosecutorial reconstruction | Official review and public statement attributed to Deputy Prosecutor Andrey Kuryakov | Why the tent was abandoned, why visibility and weather drove the party downhill, and why exposure became fatal | The complete original evidence record, exact movements, and the details of each injury and final position |
| 2021 delayed-slab model | Peer-reviewed physical model by Johan Gaume and Alexander M. Puzrin | How a low-looking slope, a tent cut, buried weak snow and katabatic wind loading could produce a delayed release and severe non-fatal injuries | Whether that modeled slab actually released in 1959 and the full sequence after departure |
| 2022 observations of avalanches | Later field expeditions reported by the model’s authors | That avalanches are a real possibility at the pass | They do not identify the cause of the 1959 deaths |
| Foul-play and sensational theories | Claims built around unusual injuries, reported radiation or other anomalies | They offer alternative narratives for selected details | The reviewed sources do not establish those details as proof of homicide or another non-avalanche cause |
Why the avalanche theory was once disputed
- Visible avalanche evidence: Critics questioned why obvious debris or a large fracture line was not documented. A small slab, wind redistribution and subsequent weather could leave less conspicuous traces than a major avalanche, but the model does not turn an absence of signs into proof.
- Delay: A release many hours after the tent was cut seems counterintuitive if the cut itself was the trigger. The 7.5–13.5-hour estimate is designed specifically to show how delayed loading could work.
- Terrain: The broad slope appears relatively shallow. The model relies on irregular local topography rather than treating the entire area as one constant angle.
- Injury severity: Severe chest and skull injuries raised questions about whether an avalanche could injure people without killing them immediately. The modeled small slab is intended to address that combination.
These responses improve the avalanche hypothesis, but they are not historical confirmation. A model can demonstrate that a sequence is possible without identifying it as the sequence that occurred.

What remains unknown?
The central unresolved issue is historical, not merely mechanical: did the specific slab described by the 2021 model release that night? No reviewed source supplies a direct observation or contemporaneous measurement proving it.
Other open questions concern the period after the tent was abandoned. The reviewed reporting itself leaves room for uncertainty about the group’s directions, the timing of movements, and how the evidence from the 1959 case was interpreted. Those gaps are compatible with an avalanche emergency; they simply prevent a complete reconstruction.
Unusual injuries and reports of radiation have often been used to support dramatic theories. The available sources do not establish those features as evidence of foul play. They should be treated as questions about the historical record, not as conclusions about murder, military testing or paranormal causes.
How to evaluate a documentary or theory about Dyatlov Pass
- Identify the source type. An official prosecutorial statement, a peer-reviewed physical model and a later field observation answer different questions.
- Separate observation from inference. The abandoned tent and body locations are observations reported from the case; the avalanche trigger and the exact travel route are interpretations.
- Check the scope of the claim. The 2021 model addresses release mechanics and injuries, not every event after the hikers left.
- Look for calibrated language. “Plausible,” “modeled” and “consistent with” are not synonyms for “proved.”
- Reject false certainty. A theory that explains one unusual detail but ignores weather, terrain, visibility and the group’s final locations is incomplete.
Has the avalanche theory solved the mystery?
It has narrowed the field and supplied the strongest evidence-based explanation in the reviewed material. The 2020 prosecutorial finding identifies an avalanche as the trigger, while the 2021 paper provides a detailed mechanism that answers several longstanding physical objections. Later observations show that the pass can produce avalanches.

It has not solved every detail. The scientific paper does not prove that its modeled slab released in 1959, and the official review does not make the complete timeline independently verifiable from the material summarized here. The most accurate conclusion is therefore limited but substantial: an avalanche-driven evacuation followed by fatal exposure and injuries is the leading explanation, while parts of the night remain unresolved.
