Dwayne Johnson plays real-life MMA fighter Mark Kerr in A24’s 2025 film The Smashing Machine. The trailer introduces a drama about Kerr’s fighting career and the strain surrounding his life and relationships—not a documentary or a guarantee that every scene recreates history exactly.
Who is Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine?
Kerr is a former mixed martial arts fighter whose career included two UFC heavyweight tournament victories. The UFC says he won the tournaments at UFC 14 and UFC 15 in 1997: Two UFC heavyweight tournament wins — UFC, 1997. UFC’s account of Kerr and the film is the source for that record.
A24 describes its film as the story of mixed martial arts and UFC fighter Mark Kerr, with Johnson and Emily Blunt among the stars. A24’s film page establishes the casting and premise.
What is the film about beyond the fights?
The film’s focus extends beyond Kerr’s bouts. Seven Bucks Productions says the story follows him in the no-holds-barred era of the UFC, at the peak of his career, as he questions himself and struggles with life and relationships. Blunt plays Dawn Staples, whose own struggle to find her place in Kerr’s chaotic world is part of the story. Seven Bucks Productions’ project page describes this broader relationship-centered angle.

When did the trailer come out, and when was the film scheduled?
MMA Fighting reported the first trailer’s arrival on April 29, 2025, and identified Benny Safdie as the film’s writer-director. A third-party FilmSelect YouTube upload dated that day listed an October 3, 2025 theatrical release date; that date is attributable to the upload’s description, not to a verified A24 trailer page. The film later had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 1, 2025, according to the Associated Press.

What does “transforms into” mean here?
It means Johnson portrays Kerr. The headline phrase describes the casting and the visual impression of the trailer; it should not be taken as a sourced account of the makeup, prosthetics, training, or other techniques used to create Johnson’s appearance. The Associated Press reported Johnson saying before the Venice premiere, “The transformation part was something I was really hungry to do.” That statement conveys his interest in the role, but does not detail how the transformation was achieved.

Is The Smashing Machine a true story?
It is presented as a film about the real fighter Mark Kerr, and the UFC’s account confirms his two 1997 tournament wins. That establishes the historical subject and a specific part of his record, but it does not verify the accuracy of individual scenes, dialogue, chronology, or the film’s portrayal of his personal relationships. The trailer is a dramatic preview, not proof that every moment happened as shown.
