The strongest behind-the-scenes accounts of Dwayne Johnson’s Hollywood career are not all tales from a movie set. They include his push to give Black Adam a separate film, a reporter’s observations on a Jumanji set, and the long path that brought The Smashing Machine to director Benny Safdie. The available reporting supports eight distinct stories of varying kinds—not ten equally detailed production anecdotes—so this account separates first-person recollections, collaborator accounts, official credits, and a reporter’s observations rather than filling gaps with invented backstage detail.
Black Adam became a standalone story after Johnson argued against combining it with Shazam
Vanity Fair’s 2022 account says an early script combined the origin stories of Black Adam and Shazam. Johnson recalled believing that approach would do Black Adam a disservice and said he advocated for separate films. That is Johnson’s account of his creative advocacy, as reported by Vanity Fair, not evidence that he alone made every decision about the film.
The same feature says Johnson, Seven Bucks producer Hiram Garcia, and producer Beau Flynn pitched the project to director Jaume Collet-Serra while making Jungle Cruise in 2018. Collet-Serra described the film’s approach as: “This is a movie where you introduce Black Adam right away, and then throughout the movie you slowly peel back the onion and reveal what happened.”
He described Black Adam and the Justice Society as projects he fought to make
In an interview published October 20, 2022, Cinemark reported that Johnson had been working on Black Adam for more than a decade. Johnson said he had fought for both the film and the Justice Society of America, the superhero team featured in it. He put his commitment this way: “I am running into the DC Extended Universe with passion, with fervor, with some intensity — because, again, I fought for this.” The duration and characterization are presented in Cinemark’s interview; they do not establish an exact start year.

Jumanji moved from script to a meeting with director Jake Kasdan quickly
In a set-visit interview, Johnson said the Jumanji script reached him in April. He liked it, and a meeting with director Jake Kasdan helped the project blossom. The account does not identify the year for that April, so it is best understood as a snapshot of the project’s development rather than a dated production timeline. The recollection appears in Global Grind’s Jumanji set visit.
A reporter saw an explosion and heard Johnson and Kevin Hart ad-lib
The Global Grind visitor also describes watching an explosion from roughly 30 yards away and hearing Johnson and Kevin Hart ad-lib a scene. These are the reporter’s observations on set, not stories Johnson told about the shoot. The account does not provide more detail about the explosion or the improvised exchange, so there is no basis to reconstruct what happened beyond those observations.

Jumanji’s stunts drew on the logic of playing an avatar
In the same interview, Johnson discussed varying the stunts and connecting them to the wish-fulfillment premise of playing a game avatar. That framing links action to the characters’ situation inside the story, rather than treating every stunt as interchangeable spectacle. It is a description of the stunt concept, not a specific claim about how a particular sequence was filmed.
Seven Bucks and Hiram Garcia recur across Johnson film credits
The official 2021 Jungle Cruise press kit lists Seven Bucks projects and credits Hiram Garcia as a producer on films including Jumanji: The Next Level, Hobbs & Shaw, Rampage, Skyscraper, and Black Adam. The credits show a recurring production network around Johnson’s films; they do not establish that Johnson personally controlled every creative decision on each one. The Mark Kerr project went from documentary discovery to Benny Safdie
According to an Associated Press report in 2025, Johnson watched John Hyams’ documentary about mixed martial artist Mark Kerr, later acquired the rights through Seven Bucks, and brought the project to director Benny Safdie. Safdie said he saw an opportunity for Johnson to show something that was not often being asked of him as an actor: “When I met him, and he brings this story, I was just like, OK, I get it. There’s so much there that maybe he’s not being asked to show.” The account is Safdie’s recollection as reported by the Associated Press.
A dormant project still mattered to Safdie
The AP reported that Johnson announced The Smashing Machine in November 2019 and that the pandemic delayed it. Safdie continued thinking about the project and sent Johnson a Nautica sweater associated with Kerr, together with a handwritten letter expressing hope of being involved. AP says Johnson did not respond at the time. That reported silence does not establish why he did not reply or what he thought of the gesture.

A profile puts the public persona beside family history and privacy
Not every revealing account of Johnson’s life in Hollywood is a production story. In a 2026 Esquire profile, he recalled intervening when his mother walked into traffic during a family crisis. The personal memory is part of a broader account of family history, not light set trivia. In the same interview, Johnson spoke about pursuing peace and keeping more of his life quiet: “I’m going to put in the work, and I’ll keep it as quiet as I can.” Read the account in Esquire’s 2026 profile.
