The newspaper said she had received final approval for assisted dying after a three-and-a-half-year process. That is a media account of an individual case, not a published finding by the Dutch euthanasia review committees, and it does not establish that she later proceeded.
What was reported about Zoraya ter Beek
In its May 16, 2024 report, The Guardian said ter Beek had chronic depression, anxiety, trauma, a personality disorder diagnosis the article did not specify further, and autism. The newspaper described difficulties beginning in early childhood and prior treatment that included talking therapies, medication, and more than 30 electroconvulsive therapy sessions. These are details reported by the newspaper; an individual official medical file or review-committee decision is not established here.
The Guardian report said ter Beek expected to proceed in the coming weeks after receiving what the article described as final approval. In the Netherlands, however, a physician reports a performed euthanasia or assisted-suicide case to the Regional Euthanasia Review Committees, which assess compliance with legal requirements afterward. The report should not be read as evidence of an advance government authorization or as official confirmation of the eventual outcome.
What Dutch law requires
The Dutch government explains that euthanasia and assisted suicide are criminal offences under Criminal Code articles 293 and 294, with a statutory exception when a physician meets all six due-care criteria. It says suffering arising from psychiatric disorders can qualify, but a psychiatric diagnosis by itself does not establish eligibility.

- The request must be voluntary and well-considered.
- The patient’s suffering must be unbearable, with no prospect of improvement.
- The physician must inform the patient about the situation and prospects.
- The physician and patient must conclude that no reasonable alternative exists.
- An independent physician must be consulted.
- The physician must exercise due medical care.
Additional caution when suffering is psychiatric
The Regional Euthanasia Review Committees say physicians should exercise particular caution when a request arises mainly from a psychiatric disorder. Their guidance focuses on whether the patient can make this specific decision, whether the suffering has no prospect of improvement, and whether reasonable alternatives remain. It calls for psychiatric expertise: an independent psychiatrist assesses decision-making capacity, the prospect of improvement, and possible alternatives.

What the reported numbers do—and do not—show
The Guardian reported two Netherlands notifications involving psychiatric suffering in 2010 and 138 in 2023. It said the 2023 figure represented 1.5% of 9,068 euthanasia deaths that year. These are dated figures as reported by the newspaper in May 2024, not a current annual count or figures independently verified here against the primary dataset. They describe notifications, not a measure of how many people with mental illness seek or qualify for euthanasia.

How to read the headline and the interview
The age 28 belongs to earlier coverage; The Guardian called ter Beek 29 in its May 2024 report. The headline’s wording can also make the case sound like a direct consequence of a diagnosis. Dutch law instead sets out several conditions, and official guidance adds particular scrutiny for psychiatric suffering.
Ter Beek told The Guardian: “People think that when you’re mentally ill, you can’t think straight, which is insulting.” That is her stated view, not a clinical determination or a legal conclusion about eligibility.
