It is an interpolation and a new-lyric remake—not a lyric-for-lyric cover. Released September 15, 2023, the song appears on Lynch’s album Killed the Cowboy.
Why “Chevrolet” sounds familiar
The familiar element is the melody of Dobie Gray’s 1973 hit “Drift Away.” Lynch described “Chevrolet” as an interpolation of that song; in another interview, he called it a remake with “a new lyric over that classic melody.” As he put it, “Our new lyric is ‘Chevrolet.’”
That distinction matters: “Chevrolet” reuses the recognizable musical foundation, but it gives the song new words and a different performance, with Lynch and Jelly Roll bringing it into a country setting. Lynch said a songwriter friend brought him the idea, and recalled that some younger friends and cousins did not immediately recognize “Drift Away.” The melody can therefore feel familiar to listeners who know the original without requiring every listener to know its history.
Who sings it, and who wrote it?
The recording is credited to Dustin Lynch featuring Jelly Roll. BBR Music Group lists Chase McGill, Jessi Alexander, Hunter Phelps, and Mentor Williams as writers, with Zach Crowell and Ben Phillips as co-producers.

Gray’s original “Drift Away” reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. Uncle Kracker’s 2003 update, featuring Gray, reached No. 9. “Chevrolet” is a later reworking of the melody, not another performance of the original lyrics.
