Domenick Chavez, 33, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the 2023 crash that killed Laura Lynch, a co-founder of the band now known as The Chicks. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported the sentence on February 24, 2026, citing a statement from the 34th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
What happened in the crash
Lynch, 65, died at the scene of a head-on collision shortly before 6 p.m. on December 22, 2023, in Hudspeth County in Far West Texas. According to the Star-Telegram’s account of investigators’ findings, Chavez was driving west in a 2022 Dodge Ram when he attempted to pass four vehicles on a two-way, undivided highway. He entered the opposing lane and collided with Lynch’s 2016 Ford F-150.
Crash reconstruction experts reportedly estimated Chavez’s speed at 106 to 114 mph at the time of impact. That range is an estimate attributed to the experts, not a speed measurement independently verified here.
What is known about the sentence and license
The Star-Telegram reported that Chavez pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a 15-year prison sentence. Its account says he was driving with a revoked license; the revocation was connected to failures to comply with surcharges and penalties in two earlier DWI-related cases.

Authorities said alcohol was not a factor in the collision that killed Lynch. The reported history of DWI-related license penalties does not establish that Chavez was intoxicated in this crash.
Who was Laura Lynch?
Lynch co-founded the band in Dallas in 1989 with Martie Maguire, Emily Strayer, and Robin Lynn Macy. She played double bass and was the group’s lead singer for a time. The band changed its name to The Chicks in 2020, dropping “Dixie” because of the word’s connection to the Confederate states.

In a statement quoted by the Star-Telegram, the band remembered “the time we spent playing music, laughing and traveling together.” It also described Lynch as “a bright light” whose energy and humor brought a spark to the band’s early days. District Attorney James Montoya said her death brought profound sadness to her family, the Dell City community, and people who appreciated her music.
