Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider stepped down as Chicago Med showrunners after Season 9, closing a leadership era that began with the medical drama’s 2015 debut. Allen MacDonald took over for Season 10. The handoff matters within the connected One Chicago franchise, though it does not establish that Frolov and Schneider were the franchise’s last original showrunners.
Why are the Chicago Med showrunners leaving?
Frolov and Schneider announced their departure on April 9, 2024, saying they wanted to move on after nine seasons. In a joint statement reported by TVLine, they said: “We love Chicago Med and have devoted all our creative energies to it, but after nine seasons we feel it’s time for us to move on and explore other possibilities.”
The pair had led the series since its 2015 debut. Executive producer Dick Wolf thanked them for nine seasons, saying they had helped deliver what he called an “#1 bonafide hit” for NBC. Neither report attributed their exit to a dispute, cancellation, or a specific new job, so those explanations should not be assumed.
TheWrap also reported their departure on April 9, 2024, and said the show averaged more than 10.5 million viewers in its Wednesday time slot. That is TheWrap’s reported figure; its cited passage does not identify a measurement organization or methodology.

Who is the new Chicago Med showrunner?
Allen MacDonald succeeded Frolov and Schneider, taking charge with Season 10. He described his goal as preserving the show’s emotionally grounded, medicine-driven storytelling while bringing his own approach to it.
In a September 2024 interview with CinemaBlend, MacDonald said he watched 176 episodes to immerse himself in the show’s characters and world. That number is his account of his preparation, not an independently measured study. In a separate interview with TVLine, he said he wanted to continue a foundation of “really emotional, medicine-driven stories that have a real human underpinning to them.”

When did Allen MacDonald take over?

What does the showrunner change mean for One Chicago?
Chicago Med is one of three series grouped by Peacock under the One Chicago franchise, alongside Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. The shows connect through characters and crossover stories, giving a leadership change at the medical drama a broader franchise context. It remains a handoff at one series: the available reporting does not show that it changed the franchise’s production structure or that Frolov and Schneider were its last original showrunners.
