Drive-Away Dolls has the ingredients for a loose, bawdy road comedy: two mismatched friends, a trip that veers into criminal trouble, and Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan playing off each other with appealing ease. That chemistry gives the film much of its spark. But the screenplay and comic pacing do not always keep up, leaving its unruly energy more enjoyable in bursts than consistently funny.
What is Drive-Away Dolls about?
Jamie, reeling from another breakup, sets off on an impromptu trip to Tallahassee with her more reserved friend Marian. Their plans go sideways when criminals become part of the journey, turning a friendship road trip into a caper. The setup is best approached spoiler-light: the film’s appeal lies less in a puzzle to solve than in watching the two women navigate an increasingly strange situation.
Directed by Ethan Coen and written by Coen and Tricia Cooke, the 2024 comedy is rated R and runs 84 minutes. Focus Features lists its US theatrical release date as February 23, 2024.
Do Qualley and Viswanathan make a convincing odd couple?
They are the film’s clearest asset. Qualley gives Jamie an impulsive, unbuttoned comic charge, while Viswanathan’s more contained Marian makes an effective counterpoint. Their contrast supplies the road trip with a dependable source of friction and amusement, and the pair feel more compelling together than the caper’s machinery does on its own.

That does not mean the leads always command the movie. The Associated Press notes that supporting characters can outshine the heroines, a weakness that matters in a story built around the women’s partnership. The ensemble brings comic color, but those interruptions sometimes pull attention from the relationship that should anchor the film.
How well do the bawdy humor and queer perspective work?
Drive-Away Dolls embraces a deliberately bawdy, playful register, drawing on the spirit of older sexploitation cinema rather than aiming for polished restraint. The lesbian road-trip framing is central to its identity, not a decorative detail. That perspective gives the premise a particular point of view, while the film’s willingness to be silly is part of its intended pleasure.

Coen described the intended mood as “glee,” and Cooke said, “If it leads to more B-movies being made, bring ’em on,” as reported by the Associated Press. Those remarks help explain the filmmakers’ appetite for an unruly B-movie sensibility; they do not settle whether every gag or tonal swing lands. The film’s playful intent is evident, but its success depends on a viewer’s tolerance for broad humor and uneven execution.
Where does the comedy lose momentum?
The screenplay’s familiarity and the film’s erratic rhythm keep its comic energy from building into a consistently satisfying whole. Some lines and performances are amusing, and the short runtime helps the movie move along, but compactness is not the same as pace: the Associated Press found that it still drags. The result is less a smooth comic escalation than a sequence of lively moments interrupted by stretches that feel slack.

That mixed response shows up in the critical picture. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus credits the appealing odd-couple chemistry with helping the film “power past its overly familiar screenplay and erratic execution.” The Associated Press was warmer about the performances and quotable lines, awarding three stars out of four, while also pointing to the drag and the supporting cast’s ability to steal focus. TIME took a more negative view, framing its review as “Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls Stalls Out.” These judgments differ in emphasis, but converge on a film whose energy and execution do not always align.

If you enjoy bawdy comedies, odd-couple banter, and queer stories that lean into playful genre excess, the pairing of Qualley and Viswanathan makes this a reasonable watch. If you need tight plotting or jokes that land steadily from scene to scene, the familiar script and stop-start rhythm are likely to frustrate. Its strongest case is the chemistry and the willingness to be cheerfully unruly—not the precision of its caper.
