Drew Barrymore’s relationship with her mother, Jaid Barrymore, has changed from a painful teenage rupture to ongoing contact. In a 2025 interview, Drew said they check in, speak on holidays, and can call or text. Her account also makes clear that contact does not mean every hurt has been resolved.
Are Drew Barrymore and her mother still estranged?
In a 2025 Us Weekly profile, Drew described a relationship with regular check-ins and holiday conversations: “We check in. We have a very nice rapport. We speak on holidays. I can pick up the phone and text her.” That is the clearest recent public description of their contact. It suggests they are not currently estranged in the way Drew described in 2014, though it does not establish that their relationship is fully repaired.

Drew has also described the relationship as nontraditional and emotionally complicated. In the 2025 profile, she expressed gratitude for things her mother passed on, including a love of books and comedy, while distinguishing gratitude from approval.
Why did Drew Barrymore and her mother become estranged?
A difficult adolescence and emancipation
Drew was primarily raised by Jaid, whom the Los Angeles Times describes as a single parent. Its profile recounts Drew’s feelings of abandonment and conflict during adolescence, as well as treatment and emancipation. These accounts describe Drew’s experience; they do not, by themselves, reduce either person or their relationship to a diagnosis.

#1 Best Overall
In a 2015 extract from her memoir Wildflower, Drew wrote that a California court emancipated her at 14. Looking back, she said, “I had to part ways from my mother because we had driven our relationship into the ground.” She also wrote that Jaid supported her at the emancipation hearing. This is Drew’s retrospective account of a painful separation, not a claim that the two never had contact again.
How did their relationship change over time?
2014: distance despite empathy
In a 2014 interview reported by ABC News, Drew described feeling empathy, guilt, and sensitivity toward Jaid, but said the emotional complexity had not brought them closer. “But we can’t really be in each other’s lives at this point,” she said. That statement reflects their circumstances then, not their later contact.

2015: making peace without a conventional relationship
By 2015, Drew told TIME that it had taken a long time to make peace. She said getting older, having children, and releasing some guilt, pain, and resentment had helped. She also rejected the idea that a relationship had to look conventional to be valid: “Because it’s not normal doesn’t make us bad people.”
2023: mixed feelings and a meaningful exchange
In 2023, Drew spoke about continuing to financially support Jaid while also having ambivalent feelings about their history. A birthday message from Jaid expressing pride and love affected her, but one warm exchange does not show that every earlier conflict had been resolved.

Some headlines at the time framed Drew’s comments as wishing her mother dead. Drew rejected that interpretation in a video reported by Good Morning America: “I have never said that I wish my mother was dead.” She said she had been talking about the difficulty of working through a painful relationship while a parent is alive.
2025: ongoing contact, not proof of complete repair
In the 2025 Us Weekly profile, Drew described check-ins, holiday conversations, and the ability to call or text Jaid. She also spoke with gratitude about what she had inherited from her mother while making clear that gratitude did not amount to approval of everything. Her account supports a picture of improved contact with unresolved complexity, rather than either total estrangement or a fully healed relationship.

How has Drew Barrymore’s childhood influenced her parenting?
A March 2025 Independent report discusses how Drew’s childhood informs her own parenting and describes work toward reconciliation over time. Those reflections offer context for how she thinks about raising her children; they do not independently establish the private, present-day state of her relationship with Jaid.
Drew’s public accounts are best read as dated snapshots: a serious rupture in adolescence, distance in 2014, a description of making peace in 2015, ambivalence and a meaningful exchange in 2023, and reported regular contact in 2025. The latest account speaks to contact, not to every private detail between mother and daughter.
