After announcing the engagement in September 2024, she pushed back on commenters who treated their seven-year relationship as evidence that the couple should have married sooner.
What happened when Drew Afualo announced her engagement?
Afualo announced her engagement to Tanuvasa on TikTok on September 2, 2024, according to Geo.tv. PerthNow published its account on September 5. Both outlets described the couple as having been together for about seven years.
Some commenters focused on the length of the relationship. One comment quoted by Geo.tv asked, “7 years and no ring???? Girl stand up??!!!!!” The criticism implied that Afualo should feel embarrassed—or leave—because the proposal had not happened sooner.
Geo.tv also reported that Tanuvasa posted “GOT ‘EM” and joked that he had persuaded Afualo to accept something bigger than the prom date she had turned down 13 years earlier. That was a playful detail in his reported post, not evidence of a separate, independently verified timeline.

Why did Drew Afualo get engaged after seven years?
Afualo’s explanation, as reported by PerthNow and Geo.tv, was that the couple had understood early in their relationship that they wanted to marry, but did not want to do so until both were ready. She rejected the idea that dating has a universal deadline or that their engagement reflected a one-sided campaign for a proposal.
PerthNow quoted her saying, “Our engagement was a mutual decision that we made together.” That is the clearest answer to the commenters’ assumption: the couple chose when to take the next step together, rather than measuring their relationship against someone else’s schedule.

What did Afualo say to the critics?
Geo.tv reported that Afualo responded to the timing criticism by saying, “Also, I’ve been saying this for f****** years. But there is no f****** timeline on dating.” The outlet also reported her reply to a commenter as “Get into it, mama,” while she showed her ring. These statements are reported by the outlets; the original social posts were not independently reviewed.
She also challenged the idea that an engagement ring proves a partner’s love. PerthNow reported Afualo’s framing of the ring as a sign that she loved herself enough to wait for the right person. In another reply quoted by the outlet, she wrote, “Idk but more importantly, idc ❤️”.

How Afualo described commitment
Afualo’s response was not simply that couples should ignore outside opinions. She also spoke about what a relationship can reveal over time. PerthNow quoted her saying, “It’s really easy to be awesome when things are awesome. You really need to go through hardship together to find out if that person is the one you’re supposed to be with.”
That perspective helps explain why the seven-year figure did not, in her account, mean the couple had been stuck or waiting for a decision. Their own measure was whether they were ready to make the commitment—not how quickly an engagement would satisfy strangers online.
