Nicolas Cage makes Paul Matthews painfully awkward to watch—and magnetic enough that the film can keep asking us to watch him.
What is Dream Scenario about?
Written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, Dream Scenario follows Paul Matthews (Cage), a hapless family man and professor whose life changes when strangers begin seeing him in their dreams. A24’s synopsis describes millions of people suddenly encountering Paul in this way. At first, the appearances bring him attention and a kind of celebrity; then the dreams turn nightmarish, and Paul has to live with a public image he cannot control. A24’s official film page lays out the premise.
The setup works as both surreal fantasy and a sharp mechanism for examining fame. Paul becomes known to people who have never met him, and their version of him begins to matter more than the private person. The dream logic makes that imbalance literal: he is present in other people’s minds, but has no say in what happens there.
Why is Nicolas Cage both cringe and magnetic?
Cage plays Paul as a man who wants to be seen as interesting, but often appears to be waiting for the world to confirm it. His awkwardness is not just a string of comic mannerisms; it is the performance’s engine. Paul is recognizable in his small ambitions and social misfires, yet Cage gives those traits a theatrical charge. You may wince at him, then find yourself leaning in to see what he will do next.

That friction is the film’s strongest achievement. If Paul were simply pathetic, the joke would grow stale; if he were effortlessly charismatic, the story’s uneasy attention would lose its point. Cage keeps both possibilities alive. The performance is a reason to watch even when the film’s larger satire becomes less precise.
Cage was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor, according to Borgli’s official film page. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. Its principal cast also includes Julianne Nicholson and Michael Cera, with Dylan Gelula, Kate Berlant, Dylan Baker, Tim Meadows and Al Warren listed on Borgli’s page.

How does the film balance comedy and menace?
The film moves from absurd comedy through dreamlike unease into real menace. Its premise supplies a steady comic question—what would it mean to become famous for appearing in other people’s dreams?—but the answer grows darker as the dreams change and public attention hardens into judgment. The Guardian describes the viral-fame satire as light-hearted yet heavy with menace, a useful description of the tonal tension rather than a claim that the balance works equally well in every scene. The Guardian review develops that reading.
That shift gives the film more than a one-joke concept. The dream sequences can be funny, bizarre or disturbing, while the consequences outside them bring the story closer to social satire. The unease comes from watching a person become a screen for everyone else’s fears and assumptions.

Does its satire of public backlash hold up?
The film is most persuasive when it shows how quickly attention can turn into a force that defines someone from the outside. Its later treatment of backlash and cancel culture is more debatable. RogerEbert.com argues that some culture-war references produce easy comic effects rather than deeper insight. That review emphasizes a weakness that sits alongside the film’s stronger premise: the story’s ideas about public judgment can feel less nuanced than its depiction of fame as a strange, uncontrollable phenomenon.
This is where the film’s two modes do not always reinforce each other. The dream premise is precise: Paul is made famous by an image he cannot direct. The broader cultural argument asks for more than a clever mechanism, and its conclusions are not as compelling as the spectacle of Paul trying to survive the attention.

Is Cage’s performance enough to carry the film?
For viewers drawn to character-driven black comedy, yes. Cage gives the movie a central figure whose discomfort and vanity remain watchable, and the premise repeatedly finds new ways to make his sudden celebrity uncanny. The performance does not erase the unevenness of the later satire, but it gives the film a human center when its argument begins to feel blunt.
Dream Scenario is therefore more successful as an absurd, unsettling Cage vehicle than as a definitive account of internet culture. Its best scenes make public projection feel both ludicrous and frightening; its less convincing moments explain the point too plainly. The contradiction is part of its appeal, but also the limit of its reach.

Runtime, rating and content notes
Runtime and classification depend on territory and version. Apple TV lists a 1 hour 42 minute runtime and an R rating for language, violence and some sexual content on its U.S. listing: Apple TV. In the UK, the BBFC lists the cinema cut at 101 minutes 43 seconds and the home-entertainment version at 102 minutes, with classifications for strong violence, threat, bloody images, sex references and language: BBFC.
