Producer Kozo Morishita says Toriyama supplied the title and early character drafts and image illustrations. The series’ writers developed its plot, while character designer Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru created Super Saiyan 4 and described Toriyama as someone who could review designs and offer guidance.
Toriyama’s role began with the title and early visual concepts
Producer Kozo Morishita described Toriyama’s contribution in an interview reported by ComicBook.com in 2017. According to Morishita, Toei’s team gave Toriyama simple prompts about journeys to particular kinds of planets, and Toriyama responded with character drafts and image illustrations. Morishita named kid Goku, Pan, Trunks, the spaceship and other major characters among the subjects.
This account makes Toriyama’s contribution more than a mere title credit: he helped establish visual ideas for the series at an early stage. But it does not mean that he personally designed every character or directed the full production. The claim comes through a translated interview reported by ComicBook.com, so it is best understood as Morishita’s account of the process rather than a complete production-credit list.
Toei’s writers developed the actual story
Toriyama’s early prompts and illustrations were separate from writing the series’ story. An English FAQ at the Akira Toriyama Super Database, summarizing the 1997 Dragon Ball GT Perfect File, says Toei Studios’ scriptwriters generated the plot. It also describes Toriyama and Toei staff making mood-setting image drawings to help artists capture the feel of the GT universe, with the opening sequences drawing on those images.

- SON GOKU as seen in "DRAGON BALL GT" joins S.H.Figuarts
- Featuring a totally new sculpt and enhanced joints, it captures dramatic poses from the series with ease

- [Set Contents]Main Body, Three expression parts, Five pairs of option hands, Optional head, Optional uniform, Kamehameha attack effect parts
- The product box will have a Bandai Namco warning label, which is proof that you are purchasing an officially licensed Bandai Spirits product
The distinction is between supplying early visual direction and authoring the episodes’ narrative. The Perfect File-derived account is useful corroboration, but the FAQ is an unofficial English reference; it should not be treated as a direct production credit or as Toriyama’s own statement.
Who created Super Saiyan 4?
Super Saiyan 4 is credited here to GT character designer Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, not Toriyama. In a 2025 interview with Le Monde, Nakatsuru explained that he imagined how Toriyama might draw the transformed characters. He also said Toriyama could look at designs, give opinions or instructions, and ask for corrections.

That describes a review and guidance role, not proof that Toriyama originated the Super Saiyan 4 concept. Nakatsuru was the designer; Toriyama’s perspective could inform revisions. The interview’s published statement is in French, so this explanation paraphrases it rather than presenting an unverified English quotation.
What does “GT” stand for?
The sources give more than one interpretation, so there is no single expansion to present as uncontested. Morishita recalled that Toei interpreted the title as “Grand Touring,” conveying a road-movie idea. The Perfect File-derived FAQ also records “Great Touring” and “Galaxy Touring” as explanations associated with the initials. Morishita said Toei initially received the title without knowing what it meant.

No. Production involvement and canon status are different questions. ComicBook.com’s report says Toriyama had not publicly specified what was or was not canon. The accounts of his title, design and review contributions do not amount to an official ruling that GT is either canon or non-canon.
